  • Sunday Night Mystery Episode 22, Keith Burgess, A Murder to Solve
    Jul 28 2024

This weeks story, from "Sunday Night Mystery" hosted by Brett, revolves around the unsolved murder of Keith Burgess in Bristol.

Keith, a well-liked British Rail steward and church member, was brutally killed in his flat on December 17, 1989.

That day, after attending mass and visiting a local tavern, he returned home, unaware of the danger lurking. A mysterious man wearing a blue and white bobble hat was seen near his flat. Keith's neighbor, Betty Taylor, witnessed Keith inviting someone inside and later saw the mysterious man leave, only to find Keith's lifeless, brutally attacked body soon after.

The investigation revealed puzzling clues: three significant phone calls the week before Keith's murder, a missing Filofax and photo album, and an unidentified lunch companion in London two days prior. Despite police efforts, the killer, described as a slender young man with distinct facial features, remains at large.

The motive for the vicious attack remains unknown, leaving the community and investigators searching for answers.

Please, remember Keith for his positive impact and continue seeking the truth in unsolved mysteries

  • Sunday Night Mystery Episode 21, Helen Fleet, The birth of a serial killer?
    Jul 20 2024

Sunday Night Mystery Case Files: Episode 22

Helen Fleet: First of the Dogwalker Murders? Weston-super-Mare 1987

Welcome back to Sunday Night Mystery, your guide through the chilling enigmas of the unknown. I’m Brett, and tonight, we delve into the dark tale of Helen Fleet, whose peaceful retirement in Weston-super-Mare ended in a gruesome and baffling murder.

In the serene seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, Helen Fleet, a 66-year-old retired factory inspector, enjoyed her days walking her two dogs, Bilbow and Cindy, in Worlebury Woods. On March 28, 1987, Helen left her blue Datsun in Worlebury Hill Road, unaware that this routine stroll would be her last. Stabbed ten times, battered, and strangled, Helen's screams shattered the tranquility of the woods.

The community was shaken as news of her brutal death spread. Despite a massive investigation involving over 120 officers, her killer was never found. What could drive someone to murder a beloved widow known for her gentle nature?

Helen’s final moments remained a mystery. Two people reported hearing a scream at 12:20 p.m. that day. Twenty minutes later, Helen’s friend, Sylvia Lewis, alerted by the barking dogs, discovered her lifeless body. Sylvia’s frantic call brought David and Hazel Davies to the scene, where they found Helen surrounded by her faithful companions, Bilbow and Cindy.

Police theorized Helen may have known her killer after reports surfaced that she had been talking to a youth. Witnesses saw two other youths fleeing the woods, and a mysterious figure carrying a yellow hard hat or crash helmet became the investigation's focus. Over the years, new leads emerged. Witnesses described a youth in a white ski jacket with red and blue trim and another in a ski jacket with red and grey squares. Thirteen years later, a potential witness came forward, leading to a photofit release in hopes of identifying the mystery youth.

Retired police officer Chris Clark suggested Helen might have been the first victim of a serial killer, linking her murder to the unsolved cases of Kate Bushell and Lyn Bryant, who were also killed while walking dogs. These cases, spanning over a decade, shared chilling similarities: women attacked in broad daylight, isolated areas, brutal violence, yet no signs of sexual assault or robbery.

The elusive killer appeared both meticulous and impulsive, a paradox of organization and spontaneity. Despite the horror, a pattern emerged: the geographic proximity of the killings and the untouched dogs suggested a deeper psychological motive. Clark's insights painted a picture of a methodical predator driven by madness.

As detectives from multiple jurisdictions continue their relentless pursuit of justice, the truth remains hidden in the shadows. Helen’s killer remains at large, and the mystery of Worlebury Woods endures. Will the truth ever come to light?
