  • ADHD or ADHD-ish?
    Jul 2 2024

Welcome back to another episode in the Entrepreneurs with ADHD series!

Today, I’ll explore the legitimate reasons why many people decide against getting an official diagnosis, the challenges involved in obtaining one, and what you can expect if you're considering it.

I’ll also share why I’m embracing the term "ADHD-ish" and advocating for a world where everyone, diagnosed or not, can feel supported and informed.

Stick around for an episode packed with insight, empathy, and a call for broader acceptance and understanding within the ADHD community.

Whether you’ve been diagnosed, suspect you might have ADHD, or are just plain curious, this episode is filled with insights you cannot miss.

What to expect in this episode:

    • The rigorous and often frustrating process of getting an official ADHD diagnosis as an adult.
    • Why many people, despite recognizing ADHD traits, choose not to get diagnosed
    • Alternative labels like "fast-brained," "creative," or even the trendy "neurospicy."
    • How past experiences and societal misconceptions keep many from seeking an ADHD diagnosis and treatment.
    • Why I’ve started using terms like ADHD-ish to create more inclusivity

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, one of the decisions you’ll need to make is whether to share it with others, especially people you work with.

Join fellow ADHD coach Cathy Rashidian and I on July 19th for a LinkedIn Live discussion on if, when and how to disclose your diagnosis in the workplace or in your own business.

  • How to Get Yourself to Focus and Take Action with an ADHD Brain
    May 28 2024

Welcome to the third episode in Entrepreneurs with ADHD series. In this solo episode, I address the all too common challenge of having trouble getting our brain to focus on the task at hand and initiate taking action on it.

The secret is understanding that there are really only four things that stimulate focus and action for the ADHD brain, called drivers, and they are interest, challenge, novelty, and urgency.

Each of us responds to these drivers in unique ways, but with just a little effort, we can create an effective strategy for how to use each of them to create and sustain momentum in our business, on demand.

Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll learn:

    1. **Interest Driver**: Discover how to tap into activities that genuinely excite you and how this can jump-start your productivity.

    2. **Challenge Driver**: Learn to set personal milestones that push your limits and keep you engaged.

    3. **Novelty Driver**: Implement new and novel changes to keep your ADHD brain stimulated and avoid boredom.

    4. **Urgency Driver**: Understand how to harness the power of deadlines and time constraints for last-minute productivity pushes. I explain the downside of overutilizing this one and why you want to avoid it.

This episode is full of real-life examples from my coaching business, as well as practical tips on how to implement these strategies yourself.

    Mic drop moment:

"It's a really bad idea to only use urgency to get things done. Like anything else that becomes habitual, it’s a lot less effective over time while still doing plenty of damage to our bodies, minds and brains, and probably to our business and our relationships as well."

  • What The Research Has to Say About ADHD and Entrepreneurship
    May 14 2024

Today we are kicking off a shiny new series for Entrepreneurs with ADHD.

Despite the growing number of entrepreneurs who identify with ADHD, there’s still a great deal of confusion and controversy.

I turned to an expert in the field who is a professor of entrepreneurship who researches the impact of ADHD on entrepreneurship and also has ADHD himself.

In fact, his own diagnosis in 2012 was a pivotal moment in his career path. I’ve been following Professor Johan Wiklund of Syracuse University for the past few years and was thrilled that he was willing to chat with me.

We have a wide-ranging conversation (in true ADHD style) about the research on gender differences in entrepreneurship with ADHD, building a business with ADHD in mind, and his own experiences being diagnosed later in life.

Here's a sneak peek at what to expect:

🚀 Turning ADHD Traits into Assets: Impulsivity isn't always a setback! Dr. Wiklund shares how traits commonly associated with ADHD can propel entrepreneurs to act on opportunities with a sense of immediacy and innovation.

🤝 The Perfect Team Formula: Find out why the best entrepreneurial teams are often a balanced mix of those with ADHD traits and those without, fostering an environment where strengths are maximized and struggles are expertly managed.

🧘‍♀️ Practical Mindfulness: Both Dr Wiklund and I take a pragmatic approach to meditation, and integrate mindfulness into our daily routines

📈 ADHD and the Entrepreneurial Spirit: Dr. Wiklund discusses how ADHD informs the traits of successful entrepreneurs – like hyperfocus and high work capacity – while acknowledging the necessity of support for areas like inattentiveness and procrastination.

✨ Special Advice for Women Entrepreneurs with ADHD: Overcome stereotypes, employ self-care, outsource the mundane, and maintain your entrepreneurial spark.

    Mic Drop Moment:

"Am I being successful despite all these problems the doctors have identified? Or could it be that I've been able to use some of these traits to my advantage?"

    — Johan Wiklund, Ph.D.

Want to connect with Professor Wiklund?

I asked if he had any social media accounts. His answer: “No, I value my mental health.”

So, you can only contact him through Syracuse University
