If only the world were so simple, but it isn’t. Montgomery Bernard was firmly and stoutly in the black, but that was not how he had always been. Before, well, before, he had been gray. Not bad, not good, just human. Now, Montgomery Bernard was definitely no longer human, and death followed in his wake, painting his trail in black so dark there was no seeing outside of it.

Roden, Eastern Tennesse. A town hidden within the shadows of a mountain. A place even it’s own people would be pressured to find on a map. Land rich in hunting and forage, and most importantly gold. Why to those strong enough to take it, Roden was heaven sent, a gift from god, and it? It lured them in like swine to the slaughter.

Starting as little more than a collection of tents, the place grew into solid timber and iron. Those filled with greed and desire found what they desired and took it for their own, and they thrived. That had been a long time ago. Now, Roden had one resident—two if you counted It. Three if you counted Ezekiel Graves, which you shouldn’t, considering that he planned on getting the hell of dodge as soon as they took care of the problem that was…It.

Sirus Foxkey had long ago given up thinking he would win his fight against the darkness hiding beneath Murkwood. To say he was failing was an understatement. It was a failure that could be remedied with one simple letter. A letter summoning his daughter, a Foxkey by birthright, from St.Louis and back to his small town.

He had sent her away for a reason, he loved her more than anything on this earth. Now he had to decide, call her back and save Murkwood, if not the world, or let her carry on living her life ignorant of what lay in the shadows, as she had been for all her life.

Unfortunately, it would be a decision made for him.

Resting outside of Murkwood, Texas, was the Foxkey estate. Once filled with the laughter of nieces and nephews, aunties, and uncles, it now had only one resident, Sirus Foxkey. The manor had been empty for years, but never had he felt more alone than he was now. Sitting there, on the veranda with a letter in his hand. A letter from someone he had not seen in twenty-something years, his daughter, Vera.

She wanted to come home, but home to what? Murkwood was not as it had been. The pines and the green that she remembered were gone, replaced by little more than dust and grey. Murkwood was dead, taken by the blight itself, and there was nothing a man in a wheeled chair could do about it. God knows, he had tried.

Tangerine Clement had found it, that niggling whisper at the edge of perception, and it stared right back at her. Its large eyes were so green that they swallowed up the very world around them. Then it smiled and smiled, and smiled, showing silver teeth, stained rusted red, more teeth than anything on this earth had any right to have.

Molly and Wade Clement search for their wayward daughter, following small footsteps into the wild woods. A place Tangy knew she was never to go, not alone, not with her mama either.

Over wiggling vine and under leafy bough, into the place where the rolly bugs crawl, and the world is alight with something other.
