  • Episode 002 :The Secrets Sharks can teach us to Adapt to any environment
    Nov 16 2020
Today’s "Ricoism": Observe, Adapt & Execute

    Observe:

This step is all about analyzing the situation and environment so you can logically assess the advantages and areas of adjustment. To do so ask yourself these questions:

    ·  What is similar to my past environment or the environment you were comfortable in?

    ·  What is different? This way you can see the contrast and really determine Is it really that big of a difference?

    ·  Who is like your client’s staff?

     Adapt:

Now that you have the information for your initial observation you are ready to Adapt. Ask:

    ·  What current skills do I possess that fit well, or even provide an advantage to this new environment?

    ·  How does my previous experience add value?

    ·  How do I make the uncomfortable comfortable?

    Execute:

And the final key is execute. To do this you need to know:

    ·  How am I a unique solution to those who are comfortable in this environment?

    ·  What are the key areas of issues I can bring value to?

    ·  Why do they need my contribution?

    ·  What are they looking for that you see that they can't see?

    ·  And then what is my advantage over others who could provide something similar?

Once you have answers to all this question you will find that you have everything you need to determine your advantage.

    Episode: Transcribed

Opening: On this episode of the power to adapt we take a deep dive into the three key secret’s sharks can teach us to overcome uncertainty and own any environment that we find ourselves in. So let's dive right in.

I am willing to bet that many of you who know that sound just had a terrible memory right about now. I think that sound from the Jaws movie released in 1974 directed by Steven Spielberg is possibly the primary reason for why many people who saw the movie choose not to learned how to swim or swore they would never get into the water at the beach again. Even today, and I am one of those people, that movie scarred me for life. So what do sharks have anything to do with adapting to any disruption in your environment.

My inspiration for this episode was show called Shark Week, and how the scientist on the show was talking about different sharks they were tracking and how each shark adapts to their different environments, they discussed how their instincts adjust intuitively to where they're at, and not necessarily because of the environment. But more importantly, because they're looking for a way to take their abilities and their skills and to be able to reach a higher level of success in hunting prey, their instincts are to hunt, they're amazing predators, and their instincts drive them to these places. So they tracked them from Australia, Africa, Mexico, and yes, Florida, and for some reason, the scientists were ecstatic that the shark population was growing in Florida, and they observed them on how they adapted to these different environments. Now in Mexico, the water seems bottomless, and if you've seen those pictures of the great white sharks doing a Polaris breach. They explode out of the water, making these acrobatic moves in the air as they go after seals.

That was their tactic; they recognize that the way to sneak up on your prey was to adapt to the environment of going deep and going straight up underneath your target, this is used in Guadalupe Island Mexico and Cape Town Africa, in Australia Typically, they attack at dawn and at dusk when the sun is at the low position. However, there is a pattern to be noted i.e. the sun is always behind the shark during the hunt. it...

    Today's Ricoisms:

3 Priorities of companies wanting to ensure good communication in a post-covid world

    1. Provide employees the flexibility to focus on their wellness
    2. Build a culture meant for a hybrid workforce
    3. Onboard Employees effectively

Keys to communicating in a way that connects with people

    1. Keep your audience in mind. Ask yourself, how is the person I am speaking with interpreting my manner of communication
    2. Pace - To connect with anyone you must first identify their pace. Are they fast or slow. Then you adapt to their pace to make a connection.
    3. Look at Speed of speaking and your mannerisms (hands, gestures). Notice the pace of your audience and then get on their wavelength
    4. Priority- Figure out what they value and use your pace to add that into how you communicate

    1. Priority (what people value) consists of Tasks and Decisions
    2. Those who are task oriented, value results, measurable things
    3. This is because it helps them identify productivity
    4. Those who are more relational focus more on experience and make decisions based on context
    5. Understanding these classifications will help you effectively communicate with both personalities

  • Episode 007: Is Your Communication Sabotaging Your Team's Performance?
    Feb 5 2021

    In today's episode,

Ignorant leaders who let their Ego do the talking are now suffering the backlash of loss of talent, revenue, and clients. They have not adapted their communication style for virtual and uncertain times because they did not know how to or did not want to.

Glenn and Rico pick up from the previous episode and talk more about communication and how not having this information can sabotage the team's ability to function, adapt, and, most of all, maintain trust in their leader.

We talk about how to lead during these times, the qualities a good leader must have, and give tips on how small adjustments in your communication skills can quickly increase productivity, Loyalty, and Trust with your team.

    • The first 15 seconds of meeting someone are crucial in terms of making or breaking any type of relationship with them

    • In a fraction of a second, people are subconsciously putting you into one of 4 categories

    • Friend
    • Enemy
    • Irrelevant
    • Someone I want to procreate with

    • The DISC Model
    • People can be classified as a blend of these four personality styles depending on the circumstance they are put in.

    • D- Drivers- they like to be in control. They're the one's that are going to lead and find a way through conflict. They LOVE to win

    • I- Influencers- They are more relational. They have never met a stranger.

    • S- Supporters- These shine during one-on-ones. No great team survives without them. They are usually the ones cleaning up the messes from the D's and I's. They build deep, loyal relationships and really focus on helping others.

    • C- Calculators- They are logical, responsible and process oriented. They read the fine print and "keep you outta jail."

    • The DISC Road Trip!
    • D- Drives (of course)
    • I- Brings the drinks, music
    • S- Helps brings snacks, coolers, jumper cables, etc
    • C- Plans the trip, pulls up the map and plans any stops and budgets

All great leaders have four qualities:

    1. Vision
    2. Passion
    3. Determination
    4. Conscience

Are you truly listening to your people?

Are you asking enough why questions?
