175th Anniversary of the Irish Migration during the Great Famine

The Great Famine started in Ireland in 1845. In the following years, many Irish left their homeland. This mass migration profoundly changed the face of Irish culture. At that period, Canada was an important destination for migrants coming from Ireland. In this episode, we speak with Laurent Colantonio, professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal, an expert on the topic of the Great Famine in Ireland. We also hear from Lori Morrison, Vice President of the United Irish Societies of Montreal, who tells us how the Irish have influenced Canadian identity, in Montreal, more specifically.

En mai 2023, la Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC) a célébré son 150e anniversaire. Il ne fait aucun doute que la GRC a contribué à la fondation et à l’ordre des Territoires du Nord-Ouest et, ce, même avant qu’ils ne deviennent une partie du Canada. Un moment culminant dans l’histoire de notre pays est celui de Louis Riel et de la résistance du Nord-Ouest.

Cet épisode raconte l’histoire d’un conflit armé qui s’est déroulé, en ce qui est maintenant la province de la Saskatchewan – et comment Louis Riel a été responsable de négocier l’adhésion de la province du Manitoba au Canada. Après la résistance, il fut reconnu coupable pour trahison. Nous rejoignons Andrew Carrier, le vice-président de la région de Winnipeg, pour le gouvernement national de la Fédération métisse du Manitoba, représentant des citoyens métis de la rivière Rouge. Il est le ministre responsable des Services en français et de la Protection de la langue Mitchif. Il est également ministre des Survivants autochtones des pensionnats et des externats. La voix de Louis Riel est lue par David Allard, un membre de la famille éloignée de Louis Riel.

Louis Riel and the RCMP – How the Northwest Resistance Contributed to the Foundation of Canada

In May 2023, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) celebrated its 150th anniversary. There's no doubt that the RCMP contributed to the foundation and order of the Northwest Territories and even before it became part of Canada. An important moment in our country's history is the one with Louis Riel and the Northwest Resistance.

This episode tells us the story of an armed conflict that took place in the actual territory of Saskatchewan - and how Louis Riel was responsible for negotiating the place of Manitoba in Canada. After the resistance, he was convicted for treason. We met with Andrew Carrier, the Winnipeg Region Vice-President for the National Government of the Manitoba Métis Federation, representing the Métis citizens of Red River. He is the Minister for French and Michif Language Protection. He is also Minister of Residential and Day Schools. Louis Riel's voice is read by David Allard, a member of Louis Riel's distant family.

Jean Paul Riopelle est né le 7 octobre 1923. Au cours de sa vie il deviendra l’un des artistes les plus importants de l’histoire Canadienne. Avec une carrière de plus de 6 décennies, cet artiste prolifique a laissé une grande œuvre pour inspirer des artistes et des amateurs d’arts comparables. En 2023, il a été reconnu en étant gravé sur une pièce commémorative de deux dollars émise en son honneur. Dans cet épisode nous allons explorer l’exposition Riopelle, à la croisée des temps avec Sylvie Lacerte, Commissaire de l’exposition et historienne de l’art. Également, nous discuterons de l’histoire de Riopelle avec Manon Gauthier, directrice générale de la Fondation Jean Paul Riopelle et Commissaire générale des célébrations du centenaire.

100th Anniversary of the Birth of Prolific Artist Jean Paul Riopelle

Jean Paul Riopelle was born on October 7, 1923. During his lifetime, he would become one of the most important artists in Canadian history. With a career spanning six decades, this prolific artist left a body of work to inspire artists and art lovers. In 2023, his portrait was engraved on a commemorative two-dollar coin issued in his honor. In this episode, we explore the exhibition "Riopelle: Crossroads in Time" with exhibition curator and art historian, Sylvie Lacerte. We will also discuss Riopelle's history with Manon Gauthier, Executive Director of the Jean Paul Riopelle Foundation and General Commissioner of the artist's centenary celebrations.
