  • Becoming our own safe haven: With Dr Stan Steindl
    Jul 16 2024

It's common for us to be harder on ourselves than we would ever be on others. Our tone, our words and the kindness we show when someone else makes a mistake can sound very different to our self-talk when we mess up. Learning to be more compassionate towards ourselves and to being more open to receiving compassion from others is at the heart of this week's conversation with Dr Stan Steindl. Dr Steindl shares three different flows of compassion, what can stand in the way of us being open to receiving compassion from others, the components of compassion and how Compassion Focused Therapy helps us to notice our suffering and learn how we can help alleviate suffering in ourselves and others.

A clinical psychologist, Dr Stan Steindl is a leader in the science, practice and application of compassion. He's an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland (UQ), co-director of the UQ Compassionate Mind Research Group, author and founder of the YouTube channel, Compassion in a T-shirt.

  • Unlocking Your Potential: With Michael Allison
    Jun 25 2024

Anxiety can make it hard to reach our potential. Even thinking about taking a personal or professional risk can send our heart rates up and our confidence plummeting. It's not that we're not good enough, that we're not trying hard enough, that we don't want it badly enough. It's not about willpower or determination. It's because of reflexive bodily responses that occur in the face of stress and pressure, and the uncertainty around how we'll be received. The popular belief that 'it's all in our head' simply doesn't hold true.

In this powerful conversation Dr Jodi talks with Michael Allison, Founder of The Playzone. Michael's groundbreaking work brings the science of Polyvagal Theory to the area of high performance in all walks of life, including elite sport. Michael explains what stands in the way of us stepping up, stepping out, making big changes and shining in the ways that we want to, how to identify predictable patterns that show up when we're unsettled and the routines that can help anyone reach their potential.

  • Fearing the worst? No need to worry with Dr Jodi Richardson
    Jun 11 2024

Do you worry a lot? Do you know someone who does? If you answered yes to either of these questions you are going to get so much relief from this week's episode.

How we think has a profound impact on how we feel and what we do. Worry can be so very debilitating, bringing with it a gnawing sense of anxiety that disrupts daily activities, saps energy, impairs concentration and genuinely affecting happiness. Worry can also lead to insomnia, fatigue, a weakened immune system and more. There are a lot of downsides to worry, so is it worth our time and energy?

Researchers from Pen State University ran a study to answer the question 'how many worries actually come true?'. In this episode Dr Jodi Richardson shares the surprising findings of this research in addition to practical strategies to help you put worry in its place.

  • Paperback Therapy: A Conversation with Tammi Miller
    Jun 4 2024

When life gets hard (and let's face it, that's a lot of the time) it's incredibly helpful to have a mental health professional to talk things through with. Therapists can support us to manage heavy emotions, help us get unstuck, guide us to overcome unhelpful habits, move us towards the goals we have and so much more. If you struggle with anxiety, depression, overwhelm, burnout, boundaries, work or family challenges, a therapist can help. But access isn't always easy. Hurdles in the way of therapy include financial barriers, stigma, scheduling, finding someone who 'gets you', finding someone who's available and not feeling ready to actually sit down in a therapist's chair.

This week's guest, Tammi Miller, wrote Paperback Therapy to bridge the gap between the need for mental health support, and actually sitting down with a therapist. In this conversation Tammi talks with Dr Jodi about the inaccessibility of therapy, the powerful role of a counselling, the book she wrote to offer an affordable alternative if therapy is out of reach for any reason and some of the tools within.
