This is a long boring book.
Revisado: 11-14-24
I bought this book based on a Stephen King review. I won’t make that mistake again. He described it as “pulsating and riveting.” That was a lie. There are long descriptions and conversations that are painful to listen to. There is not one likable character in this book and the way the narrator describes them makes them even worse. My advice is skip this book.

Historia
Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

A good book starts at the beginning and tells the story to the end. Jumping back and forth in time and from character to character is distracting and frustrating. It makes the story hard to keep up with instead of engaging. I would not listen to another book by Liz Moore.

Revisado: 07-13-24
I’ve never been a big fan of The Gray Man series and Backblast didn’t do much to change my opinion. Mark Greaney takes 18 hours to tell a story that could have been told in 13. And Jay Snyder has the ability to make every character sound the same. After 18 hours I was really tired of listening to him. I’m a big fan of Mitch Rapp and George Guidall and in my opinion the Gray Man books don’t come close to.

Aubry Tourvel, a stubborn nine-year-old girl, comes across a wooden puzzle ball on her walk home from school. She tosses it over the fence, only to find it in her backpack that evening. Days later, at the family dinner table, she starts to bleed to death. When medical treatment only makes her worse, she flees to the outskirts of the city, where she realizes that it is this very act of movement that keeps her alive. So begins her lifelong journey on the run from her condition, which won’t allow her to stay anywhere for longer than a few days—nor return to a place where she’s already been.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Much too long.
Revisado: 01-29-24
This book would have made a great trilogy. I loved the beginning of this book (the first third - the first generation). After listening for 20 hours I started wishing there were three books instead of one. Phillipus’ story could definitely be a stand alone book. That way the reader could take a break from all the tragedy that takes place all through this book. I gave the narrator three stars not because he does a bad job but because by two thirds of the way through I grew tired of listening to him. I also grew tired of all the tragedy, sadness and Phillipus. Again, if this story was told in three books, the reader could choose when they wanted to read the story of the second and third generations. I would not rate this as one of the best novels ever and I definitely would not say it was hard to put down.

Historia
Mitch Rapp hates owing anyone a favor—especially when it’s the world’s most powerful crime lord. But when Damian Losa calls, Mitch is honor bound to answer. The Syrian government has created a highly addictive new narcotic that it plans to distribute throughout Europe. It’s a major threat to Losa’s business and he’s determined to stop it by any means necessary. Rapp is the perfect choice for the mission. Not only does he have extensive experience operating in the Middle East, but he’s also entirely expendable.

There are just too many things wrong with this story to try and detail them.
I’m pretty sure a police officer who was injured and disabled on the job would have disability and health insurance. She would not be dismissed and destitute.
Maddie is likable enough but the bad guys do things that l don’t believe they would do.

But now, three Russian assets have been exposed - including one of her own - and the CIA is convinced there's a mole in the department. A really enjoyable listen.
Revisado: 02-23-22
After a steady diet of Jack Reacher then Mitch Rapp this book was a welcome thriller without all the fights and killings. The character development was spot on and the mystery, although somewhat obvious, was still captivating. My main complaint is that Lindsey and Teresa spend too much time folding their arms across their chests. I thought the performance was excellent.
I definitely recommend Red Widow.

Hard to stay interested in Sourdough
Revisado: 02-02-22
I almost never give up on a book. I almost quit listening to Sourdough a couple of times but I didn’t. When I finished it I was mad at myself for wasting 9 hours of my time. Sourdough spends way too much time on recipes and formulas. It starts out interesting enough but loses it’s way the when two brothers leave town. My wife’s book club read Sourdough and she agreed with me. I don’t know why anyone would recommend this book.

Way better than the bad reviews.
Revisado: 11-04-21
I don’t understand what the listeners who gave this book such bad reviews want or expect. I agree the plot is a tad far fetched. So are the plots of most Mitch Rapp books. Kyle Mills does a great job of extending the legacy of Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp. And let’s face it, George Guidall is Mitch Rapp. No other narrator does Mitch justice. Although there was lots of action in this book there was less killing and more conspiracy and intrigue than other Mitch Rapp books. As with most Mitch Rapp books, I hated to stop listening and looked forward to getting back to it.
