Написанная в конце 1834 года повесть "Вий" впервые была опубликована годом позже в сборнике "Миргород". Критика, ранее очень благожелательно отзывавшаяся о "Тарасе Бульбе" и "Старосветских помещиках" восприняла "Вия" в штыки. "В "Вие" нет ни конца ни начала, ни идеи - нет ничего, кроме нескольких страшных, невероятных сцен...", "Ужасное не может быть подробно: призрак тогда страшен, когда в нем есть какая-то неопределенность...".
В 1842 году вышла измененная версия "Вия", некоторые сцены были переписаны, подробности в описании чудовищ устранены, но это не изменило мнения критиков. Время все расставило по своим местам. И сегодня этой жуткой и фантастической историей зачитываются миллионы читателей, заново переживая вместе с семинаристом Хомой Брутом все ужасы этих трех ночей, проведенных героем на украинском хуторе.
