鎌倉の避暑地で一人過ごしていた「私」は、
同じく東京から来ている「先生」に出会い、交流を深めていきます。
東京に戻ってからも、世間の目につかぬようひっそりと暮らす先生の過去に興味を示す私と、
たびたび寂しげな表情を浮かべて、世間と、そして私との隔たりを感じさせる先生との交流は続きます。
しかし先生は、私にも、奥さんにも、決してその過去を話そうとはしないのでした。
そして、地元に帰っていた私のもとに、先生から長い長い手紙が届きます。
明治という時代が終わり、大正という新しい時代が始まって間もない時期に描かれた本作品は、
その時代のこころを伝えつつ、一人の人間の強さと弱さ、苦悩を描き、今なお色あせることがありません。
