ちょうど四年目のある夏のゆうべ、深川の料理屋の門口に待っている駕籠の簾のかげから、真っ白な女の素足のこぼれているのに気がついた。この足を持つ女こそは、彼が探していた、女の中の女であろうと思われた。清吉は躍りたつ胸をおさえて、その人の顔が見たさに駕籠の後を追いかけたが、二三町行くと、もうその影は見えなかった。
五年目の春のある日の朝、清吉の寓居に馴染の芸妓から使いが来た。見馴れぬ娘であった。清吉はその娘が探していたあの足を持つ女だとわかった。清吉は娘に顔を見たのは初めてだが、足には見覚えがあると言い、上がって行って巻物でもと見せた。それは処刑される男を眺めている妃の絵であった。清吉はその奇怪な絵を見る娘の目が輝き、顔がだんだん妃の顔に似通って来た。娘は隠れた真の「己」を見出した。さらに、男たちの屍骸を喜び見る女の絵を見せると、娘はその女のような性分を持っていますと白状した。清吉は娘に近寄り、麻酔をかがせて眠らせてしまった。娘の背中には巨大な女郎蜘蛛が彫られた。娘が眠りから覚めると、「私はさぞ美しくなったろうね」と何処か鋭い力がこもった調子であった。娘は身体の痛みを抑えて、強いて微笑んだ・・・。
