<あらすじ>
お新にとって江口房之介は不思議な存在だった。初めてやって来た時、まさか馴染みになるとは思ってもみなかった。それはたいてい勘で当たるのだが、それが見事に外れたのだ。
酒を飲んで喧嘩をして追われていた房之介が「泊まらせてほしい」と声を掛けたのがきっかけだった。端正な顔は青ざめてこわばり、ひどく昂奮している様子で刀をお新に渡す手が震えていた。何もわからないほど泥酔してしまっていたので、どうして喧嘩になったのかもはっきりした記憶はないという。だが、人を斬ったらしいのだ。やがて地廻りが房之介を追ってやってきた時には、お新は布団のなかに房之介をかばった。どうにか地廻りをやり過ごすと、礼を言って帰っていった。房之介の存在はお新にもほのかな思いを芽生えさせるのに十分なものであった。
正月の中旬のある日、再び房之介はやってきた。その日を境に、房之介はお新のもとに通うようになった。「客に惚れてはいけない」という忠告は常に心にあったが、お新の心は確実に揺れているのであった……
<山本周五郎(やまもと・しゅうごろう)>
1903~67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
