治承四年六月三日、福原へ行幸あるべしとて、京中ひしめきあへり。此日ごろ都うつりあるべしときこえしかども、忽ちに今明の程とは思はざりつるに、こはいかにとて、上下さわぎあへり。(巻第五・都遷)
<巻第五 収録内容>
巻第五は、治承四年(1180年)六月から治承五年(1181年)に至るまでを描く。福原の都は半年で終わり、いよいよ源頼朝が挙兵する。
平清盛は突然、福原に都を遷す。世の人々が混乱するなか、源頼朝は文覚のすすめで平氏に反旗をひるがえす。平氏は追討軍を出すが、東国武士に恐れをなして、富士川で戦わずして敗走する。
福原遷都に対する非難が高まり、清盛はわずか半年で都を京都に戻すことになる。平氏は、近江源氏の討伐に続いて、奈良へ軍勢を向け、以仁王に荷担した南都の僧たちを討ち、奈良の寺々を焼き払うのだった。

<作者・成立>
作者未詳。『徒然草』に、平家物語の作者は信濃前司行長(しなののぜんじゆきなが)という記述があるが、確証はなく異説も多い。
成立は十三世紀初めごろ。琵琶法師の平曲によって全国に広まったため、巻数や内容の差異があるさまざまな異本が伝わる。当初は三巻本であったが、十二巻本に増補され、さらに灌頂巻(かんじょうのまき)が加わった覚一本が現在ではよく知られている。覚一本は、琵琶の名手・覚一(かくいち)が1371年に完成させたものといわれる。
