S岳村から五六町離れた山裾に藤沢病院が立っていた。田舎には珍しい造りになっており、向かって右側にはこの病院の薬局があった。そこには、藤沢家の養女である品夫が白い看護服を着て腰掛けていた。
品夫の肌は厚化粧しているかのように白かった。頬と唇は紅く、まつげと眉は植えたように濃く長かった。切れ目の長い一重瞼を伏せて、黒ずんだ瞳を隙間もなく書類の上に走らせていた。
その表情は、十二三歳の小娘のように無邪気な時もあれば、二十四五の年増女のようにませて見えることもあった。品夫は本当に忙しかった。 近い内に彼女と式を挙げるはずになっている藤沢家の養子で、前院長の甥に当たる健策という医学士。
養父の玄洋氏が急性肺炎で死亡すると、大学の研究を中止して帰ってきたが、何から何まで几帳面でその忙しさったらなかった。
特に薬局と会計の仕事だけは他人に任せない家風で、すべて品夫がたった一人で引き受けていた。そのうち品夫が仕事を終えると、正面の薬戸棚の間にかかっている大きなボンボン時計を見た。
十一時の第一点を打ち出すと、その音がなり終わるまで、うっとりと目を据えていた。するとほんの一分か二分の間。
どこか隔った部屋で話している男の声が、沁み込んでくる内に”品夫””復讐”という二つの言葉が偶然のように響いてくると品夫はパッと顔を上げた。
大急ぎで足元の反射ストーブを消して、頭の上にある百燭光のスイッチをひねると、真っ暗になった薬戸棚の間を音もなく廊下へ滑り出した。
そして、患者控え室のドアに近づいて、そっと鍵穴に目を当てると二人の男が長椅子を引き寄せて差し向かいになっていた。
一方が院長である健策。そして、もう一方が黒木という患者だった。東京育ちで物腰が上品、また見聞が広いためにいつしか院長の無二の話相手になっていた。
「……そうなんです……品夫は親の讐敵を討ちたいから、今暫結婚を延期してくれと云うのです。……あんまり馬鹿馬鹿しい云い草なので、実は僕も面喰っているのですがね……ハハハハハ」
品夫の実父にまつわる迷宮事件の真相とは。そして、品夫の讐敵とは。二人の会話の中から真実が判明する。
