ある日の夕方、一人の農夫が畑から帰っていた。煙管を咥えながら、のろのろと牛のように歩いていると、路傍の松の木の下に異様な物を見つけた。それは、眼にも眩しい金と銀の金具をちりばめた轎(かご)であった。
しかし、轎かきもいなければ伴の者もいない。まるで投げ棄ててでもあるように置いてあるのが不思議でならなかった。轎の中はひっそりとしていて、誰も乗っていそうにないし、見ている者もないので、轎の傍へ寄って往って垂れをあげた。垂れをあげて農夫は驚いた。轎の中にはお姫さまのような綺麗な女がいたのだが……
「女賊記」
館林の城下では女賊(じょぞく)の噂で持ち切っていた。それはどこからともなしに城下へ来た妖婦であった。色深い美しい顔をした女で、捕えようとすると傍にある壁のはめ板へぴったり引っついてそのまま姿を消すのであった。土地の人は誰云うとなしにそれを板女(いたおんな)と云っていた。奇怪な板女の噂は噂を生んで、城下の町では夜もおちおち眠らなかった。
そのうちに某町の豪家で婚礼があって、親戚知己をはじめ附近の人びとがめでたい席へ招かれて御馳走になった。しかし夜がもう亥時に近い頃、けたたましい女の悲鳴が聞えて来た。「板女が来た、板女が来た、誰か来て……」
