しかし、春琴が9歳の時、両眼の明を失い、これを機に舞技を断念し、専ら三味線の稽古に励んだ。 春琴は琴の師匠である春松検校の家へ丁稚に手をひかれて稽古に通った。 その丁稚の名は佐助といい、春琴より4つ歳上で13歳の時に始めて奉公に上った。 春琴に忠実である佐助は春琴の稽古の付き添いをするうちに、彼女の好むものを好むようになり、密かに三味線を購入した。
そして寝静まった頃、誰にも気が付かれないように押入れで練習するが、やがて発覚する。 一番番頭に呼びつけられ大眼玉をくらったが、春琴が「聴いてみたい」と言ったことで皆の前で披露することとなった。 短時間の独学にしてはかんどころも確かで、節回しも出来きていて皆は感心した。それから、春琴は佐助に稽古をすることとなり、春琴と佐助は主従の上にさらに師弟関係となった。春琴の稽古は厳しく、撥をもって頭を殴り佐助がシクシク泣き出すことも珍しくなかった。 春琴の稽古時の粗暴な振舞を案じた春琴の両親は佐助を春松検校の門に入れさせ、春琴が直接教授することを封じてしまったのである。 佐助は丁稚の任務を解かれ春琴の手曳としてまた相弟子として検校の家へ通うようになった。 親達は結婚を諷したが、春琴は拒否。
その後、春琴の妊娠がわかったが相手の名前を決して言わなかった。 佐助が疑われたが、春琴は頭から否定、佐助も知らぬ存ぜぬの一点張りであった。 春琴は男の子を出産し、その赤ん坊が佐助に瓜二つであったが、それでも父親は佐助ではないと言い張った。一生独り身で暮らす自分には足手まといだと涼しい顔で里子に出すと決めてしまった。
春琴が20歳、春松検校が死去したのを機会に、独立して師匠の看板を掲げ、親の家を出ていき佐助もついて行ったのである。春琴の贅沢は甚だしく利己的であり、彼女だけが大名のような生活をし、佐助以下は爪に火を燈すようにして暮らしていた。
春琴の器量が目当てで習いに来るうちの一人、利太郎という放蕩者の若旦那がいた。利太郎は梅見に誘い、春琴を口説こうとするが失敗。しかし、明くる日からもずうずうしく平気で稽古にやってきたので、春琴は本気で叩き込もうとピシピシと教えた。熱心に教えてもわざと気のない弾き方に、春琴は「阿呆」といい撥をもって眉間を打った。利太郎は「覚えてなはれ」と捨てぜりふを残して憤然と座を立ち、それきり姿を見せなかった。
それから一ヶ月半が経ったある夜、春琴は寝ているところを何者かに熱湯をかけられ、顔が爛れてしまう。爛れた顔を佐助に見られたくないといった言葉に佐助が起こした行動とは・・・。
