<あらすじ>
久野豊四郎はつぢから切り出された話に、
「それはまちがいないことなんだね」
と念を押した。つぢは頷いた。つぢのお腹には豊四郎の子がいるのだ。
御領内随一の奇勝である法師峡での逢瀬の際の告白だった。人目を忍んで逢瀬を重ねてきた二人だったが、豊四郎はその話に大いに喜び、両親にもそういうといったが、その一方でつぢの方の事情を気にしていた。つぢは、
「わたくしの事はわたくしが致します」
と言って声を潜めた。
だが、婚礼までの最後の逢瀬となったこの中二日後、豊四郎は急死した。馬術の稽古の際に、馬に放り出され、さらには踏まれて死んだのであった。それを弟の良一郎から切り出されたつぢは血の気を失って固まった。だが、心を決めると久野家の屋敷に向かい、夫人に面会を申し出た。
豊四郎へ香をあげたいというつぢに夫人は「どういうご縁の方ですか」と尋ねた。豊四郎は、母につぢとのことを話していなかったのだ。つぢは豊四郎との間柄を証明出来るものもなく、すげなく追い返されそうになるが……
両岸は相対してそそり立ち、深い谷間には渓流の音があふれていた。
何度目かのこの法師峡での逢瀬の際、つぢは豊四朗に彼女が妊娠したことを告げた。
彼は喜んだ。そして母に言うよと言った後『つぢのほうはいいのか』と聞いた。
彼女には許婚者がいたのだ。
そして三日後、豊四朗が……。
<山本周五郎(やまもと・しゅうごろ)>
1903~67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
