光源氏 三六歳
主な登場人物 紫の上、明石の君
若やかにうぐひすぞ啼(な)く初春の
衣(きぬ)くばられし一人のやうに
新年を迎え、六条院の人々はうららかな新春を過ごしていた。明石の君から、明石の姫君へ新春の祝いの手紙が届き、光源氏は幼い姫君に直接返事を書かせるのであった。
源氏は六条院の女性たちを訪ねる。花散里は、姿は衰えたものの穏やかな気質は変わらない。玉鬘は今を盛りの美しさである。明石の君の娘を思う心と聡明な美しさに惹かれて、源氏は新春の第一夜をここで過ごす。翌朝、源氏は懸命に紫の上の機嫌を取るのであった。
二条の東の院で末摘花（すえつむはな）の気の毒な様子に源氏は嘆息する。一方、空蟬（うつせみ）は尼らしくつつましやかに暮らしていた。
男踏歌という男性の歌や舞が六条院で行われ、源氏は夕霧の歌声のよさを褒め、親らしく喜んだ。
