しかし、その後アメリカに渡った際に戦争に遭遇したことでキリスト教信仰に疑念を抱くようになり、棄教したのち文学に自己表現の可能性を見出すようになりました。そうして、志賀直哉らと共に雑誌「白樺」の創刊に参加して発表された彼の小説の作風は、人種や国籍を問わず人間性を重んじる人道主義的な当時の文学界で注目を集めました。
小説や戯曲、評論だけでなく童話作品も発表しており、幼少時代の体験をもとに子どもの内面に迫った『一房の葡萄』は、雑誌「赤い鳥」に掲載されました。またこの作品は、自ら装幀、挿画を手掛けており、彼の3人の子どもに向けて献辞が捧げられています。
島崎藤村(本名春樹)は、明治学院在学中にキリスト教に入信し、西洋文学に影響を受け、北村透谷らと雑誌「文学界」を創刊しました。それまでの和歌や俳句などの定型詩や漢詩とは異なる新しい文体の詩人として出発し、近代詩を確立していきました。その後、小説執筆へと転じ、あるがままの現実を描き、且つ人間の内面を正直に描くという、写実主義と浪漫主義の両方を併せ持った自然主義文学の代表的な作家となりました。
また、在籍期間は短かったものの、東京音楽学校にてヴァイオリン、ピアノ、コーラスを学んだという経歴も持っており、音楽に関する知識も豊富だったことがうかがえます。出会った人物から様々な影響を受け、新しいものに対する情熱と探求心を常に持ち、それが創作の糧となっていたのでしょう。
1913年から3年間渡仏した際には、日本に残してきた4人の子どもたちに土産話として聞かせるために童話集をまとめており、たくさん版を重ねていることから、いかに読まれてきたかをうかがい知ることができます。
飯島夫人――栄子は一切の事を放擲する思をした後で、子供を東京の家の方に残し、年をとつた女中のお鶴一人連れて、漸く目的とする療養地に着いた。箱根へ、熱海へと言つて夫や子供と一緒によく出掛けて行つた時には、唯無心に見て通り過ぎた相模の海岸にある小さな停車場、そこへ夫人はお鶴と二人ぎり汽車から降りた。
夫人はまだ若かつたが、子供は三人あつた。新橋を発つから汽車中言ひ暮して来たそれらの可愛いものからも、夫からも、彼女は隔絶れたところへ来た。
「母さん来たよ。」
と夫人は、斯の海岸に着いたことを子供に知らせるやうに、独り口の中で言つて見た。そして周囲を見廻して寂しさうに微笑んだ。
停車場側に立つて車を待つ間、夫人はお鶴の前に近く居ながら、病院のあるといふ場処を大凡の想像で見当を附けて見た。二筋の細い道が左右にあつた。その一つは暗い松林に連なり、一つは旧い東海道の町へでも出られさうな幾分か空の開けた方へ続いて居る。悪く狡れた眼附の車夫が先づ車を引いて来て、夫人が思つたとは反対の方角を指して見せて、その病院も、夫人がこれから行つて先づ宿を取らうとする蔦屋も、松林の彼方にあたると言つて聞かせた。一帯に引続いた遠見の緑は沈鬱で、それに接した部分だけ空は重い黄色に光つて見えた……
