他の一面には私自身のあまりに平凡な、あまりに単調なその日暮らしに色彩を添えたかったのです。
この児を引き取って世話をしてやろう。
ナオミはきっと女中の役もしてくれ、小鳥の代りにもなってくれよう。
そして望みがありそうなら、大いに教育してやって、自分の妻に貰い受けても差し支えない――。
やがて、正式に河合夫人となったナオミは、女性らしい美しさを増していきました。
しかし全てが私の理想通りというわけにはいきませんでした。
ナオミは、男を欺し利用する――いわゆる毒婦へと、成長してしまったのです……。
