福岡時報の新聞記者である「私」は特ダネを探しに九大工学部へ向かう。工学部の正門前は一面の水田になっていた。
その田の中の畦道を、パラソルを片手に捧げて、危なっかしい足取りで歩く一人の女性。空色のパラソルを持った美しい佇まいは周りの目を引き付けるほど。
女性は、駅に向かうと今にも飛び込みそうな気配を見せた。
「私」は思わず轢死だ!と叫びかけたが、グッと唾を飲み込んだ。新聞記事になると察した「私」は身を伏せて女性を見守った。女性の全身に真っ黒な機関車が覆いかぶさり、パラソルが宙を舞った。
思わず耳と眼を塞いだ「私」はすぐに女性の元へと駆けつけた。「私」はまだ生きているかのように温かい屍体をひっくり返し調査した。
警察や車掌が来る前に女性から名刺や質札を自らのポケットに入れた。遠くから警官や農民が見えたため、すぐにその場から立ち去った。
夕刊の締め切りまでに勘定をつけながら記事の中身を考える。そして数時間経つと他の夕刊とは違い細かい実情が書かれた記事を世の中へと送り出した。
しかし、後日自体は思わぬ方向へと進んで行く。
パラソルの一件から一年後。電車の車窓から墓原に鯉をつないだ低い登り竿が見えた。興味を持った「私」は発車間際の電車から飛び降り墓原の場所へと向かった。
新聞記者の本能で面白い記事が書けると感じたからだ。墓標の表面を除くと10日前に亡くなった女性の墓場ということが判明。
女性の身元を町役場の死亡届で調べたあと、ある長屋風の格子戸の前に立っていた。扉が開くと老婆がひとり障子にすがるようにして出てきた。
老婆は息子と妻そして孫の帰りを待っていたのだ。あの鯉のぼりとどのような関係があるのか?物語に暗雲が立ち込み始める。
