ここは、十畳と十二畳続きの広間で紋付袴の大勢の人々が酒を飲んでいた。そこには、新郎の当主であり、青年医師の甘川澄夫に新婦の初枝。
婚礼ということもあって、村役場員、駐在所員、区長、消防頭、青年会長、同幹事など多くの人が居合わせた。
今一度、奇妙な叫び声が聞こえたので玄関を訪れると妊娠した女がいた。
全体的に赤黒く焼けたきめ細かい肌。切れ目の長い目尻。赤い唇と白い歯を光らして無邪気に笑っている格好は、グロテスクこの上ない。
台所から出てきたこの家の下男が、赤飯の握り飯を一個与えて、追い払おうとするが払い落とされる。
そして、大きく膨張した自分の下腹部を指で刺しながら頭を左右に振った。再度、奇妙な声をあげる始末。
この女は裏山の跛爺・門八の娘で空き土蔵に住んでいた。しかし、去年の秋口に女が行方不明になったのをきっかけに、門八は首をくくって亡くなった。
そして、女一人で裏山から降りてきたのだ。女は澄夫の袴腰に抱きつくと離れようとしなくなった。
なんとか女を引き剥がし、モルヒネを打って納屋へと連れて行った。実は、澄夫はこの女のことを知っていたのだ。
それは、去年の八月のこと。純潔を守っていた澄夫は欲を抑えられなくなり、裏山で出会った女を犯していた。
女の腹の中にいる子はおそらく澄夫の子供。人騒動あった初夜。寝床について過去の過ちに苛まれる澄夫は、初枝が寝ていることを確認。
女が納屋の中にいるこのチャンスを逃せぬように、皆が寝静まった真夜中に納屋へと向かった。
