炭焼きの勘太郎は、妻も子もいない独り者。毎日毎日、奥山で炭焼釜の前に立って煙を眺めては淋しいと感じていた。
今年の正月も勘太郎は、炭焼釜に楢の木や樫の木をいっぱい詰めて火をつけた。丁度二日目の朝に不思議な初夢を見た。どこからともなく悲しい小さな声で歌う声が聞こえてきた。
この歌がだんだん耳に近づくように感じ、勘太郎がふと目を開けると、そこには美しいお姫様が立っていた。奇麗な両袖を顔に当てて、泣いている姿を見たのだ。
勘太郎が驚いて起き上がると、もう夜が開けていて、表には雪が降り積もっていた。勘太郎は、寝すぎたと感じ急いで釜の前に立って火を入れようとした。しかし、昨夜の夢が気になって仕方がない。
「ちいさいちいさい虫一つ たれが憐と思おうか」
夢の中の歌のことを考えると、釜戸の入れる樫の木の虫の住まいが焼き払われることをよく思うはずがない。勘太郎は思い切って築いた竈を打ち破った。
そして、一本一本積んだ木を取り出して調べたが、不思議なことに一本も虫の穴はない。勘太郎はつまらない夢に振り回されて馬鹿馬鹿しいと感じた。
最後の一本を調べてみるとそこに小さな虫穴がひとつ見つかった。勘太郎は、お弁当を作ってその丸太を山奥に立てかけてきた。春がきたら虫が這い出して蝶が飛び回る。
虫を助けることができた勘太郎だったが、もう炭焼きをする気にはならなかった。しかし、勘太郎は炭焼き以外の仕事をしたことがないため、何をしようか考えているうちに山奥に迷い込んでしまった。
どこへいっても山ばかりで食べのものは見つからず。いくつもの夜を越えてしまいには飢えて凍えてしまいそうになった。そのうちに仙人のようになって自分の家のある方へと山を越えていった。
たった虫一匹のために陥った状況に思わず涙をこぼした。そして、春が来るが勘太郎はすっかり飢えて目が見えなくなり、とうとうばったりと行き倒れてしまったのだ。
