<あらすじ>
安倍休之助の元に嫁ぐことになった由紀は縁談に一つ不安を持っていた。それは自分が八百石の大寄合の家に生まれ、父母と兄の深い愛情に包まれて育ったこと、世の中の辛酸を知らずにただのびやかに暮らしてきたことだった。不自由ということを知らなかった雪にとって、二百石の家計の切り盛りはたやすいことと思えなかったのである。
暮れ方に三の丸下の生家を出て、安倍の家にやって来た由紀であったが、親族や仲人たちと挨拶を交わして休之助の勤め帰りを待つものの、一向に帰ってくる様子がない。
そんな最中、険しい足音とただならぬ人の叫び声が聞こえて来た。家じゅうの物音がいっぺんに途絶え、全ての人が息をひそめたしじまに「はやく医者を」という言葉が人々の耳を打った。休之助が怪我をして戻ったのであった。
その怪我がかなりの重傷と聞き、由紀は母たちの反対を押し切って、自分も安倍の嫁として手助けをしたいと、心を決めて家に残るのだが……。
