Universally acclaimed, rapturously reviewed, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography, and an instant New York Times bestseller, Chanel Miller's breathtaking memoir "gives readers the privilege of knowing her not just as Emily Doe, but as Chanel Miller the writer, the artist, the survivor, the fighter."—The Wrap

"I opened Know My Name with the intention to bear witness to the story of a survivor. Instead, I found myself falling into the hands of one of the great writers and thinkers of our time. Chanel Miller is a philosopher, a cultural critic, a deep observer, a writer's writer, a true artist. I could not put this phenomenal book down." —Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love Warrior and Untamed

"Know My Name is a gut-punch, and in the end, somehow, also blessedly hopeful."—Washington Post

She was known to the world as Emily Doe when she stunned millions with a letter. Brock Turner had been sentenced to just six months in county jail after he was found sexually assaulting her on Stanford's campus. Her victim impact statement was posted on BuzzFeed, where it instantly went viral--viewed by eleven million people within four days, it was translated globally and read on the floor of Congress; it inspired changes in California law and the recall of the judge in the case. Thousands wrote to say that she had given them the courage to share their own experiences of assault for the first time.

Now she reclaims her identity to tell her story of trauma, transcendence, and the power of words. It was the perfect case, in many ways--there were eyewitnesses, Turner ran away, physical evidence was immediately secured. But her struggles with isolation and shame during the aftermath and the trial reveal the oppression victims face in even the best-case scenarios. Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life.

Know My Name will forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing. It also introduces readers to an extraordinary writer, one whose words have already changed our world. Entwining pain, resilience, and humor, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.

I am someone who works with survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence. Men, Women, Children. For 13 years I've done this work. Chanel reminds me how crucial it is to listen, support, and fight for survivors, to be better as a people, system and society. Thank you, Chanel, for your courage and your grace. Go well.

Chanel... Chanel... Chanel. The voice who spoke a victim impact statement that stated the words of millions of victims before her, again speaks for many. Not just a blow by blow, at times so softly spoken, of a victim’s experience, and specifically her experience of which she had to learn of what happened to her while she was unconscious, but a testament to the brokenness of the legal system, especially the dysfunction of an accused’s permissible defense team behavior, but also the warped thinking around sexual assault. Victims are devoured by their perpetrator’s legal team. Ownership of wrongdoing isn’t an option — especially for the rich and privileged. Chanel speaks with elegance, eloquence, a steady rawness, graphically and with grace-filled prose. She shows us what she learned along the way, including many items she should have been informed of in advance to fully understand what was happening around her. Unwittingly and without her permission, Chanel was brought to this page in her life. With conscious and thoughtful choices, she brings us an opportunity to experience first hand what she lived, to examine our legal system, to see it in other victim’s stories she brings forward next to hers. During her long wade through the legal process Chanel also wades through the words of pundits, trolls and more, yet she puts her energies towards educating the ignorant in this book to help improve where society sorely lacks. This memoir is a gift. I’m so grateful you brought it to us, for sharing your life with us, Chanel. And to all who dare to read this, say her name. Say it often. Chanel. Chanel Chanel.
*Highly recommend the Audible format to hear the author herself.

What amazing strength you have to tell your story. I have shared this book with a friend who, like us, was also victimized. Thank you for letting us all know it is ok to carry on.
