Melissa Albert meets Twin Peaks in this supernatural thriller about one girl's hunt for the truth about her mother's disappearance.

In 1973, the thirty-one residents of Bitter Rock disappeared. In 2003, so did my mother. Now, I've come to Bitter Rock to find out what happened to her—and to me. Because Bitter Rock has many ghosts. And I might be one of them.

Sophia's earliest memory is of drowning. She remembers the darkness of the water and the briny taste as it filled her throat, the sensation of going under. She remembers hands pulling her back to safety, but that memory is impossible—she's never been to the ocean.

But then Sophia gets a mysterious call about an island named Bitter Rock, and learns that she and her mother were there fifteen years ago--and her mother never returned. The hunt for answers lures her to Bitter Rock, but the more she uncovers, the clearer it is that her mother is just one in a chain of disappearances.

People have been vanishing from Bitter Rock for decades, leaving only their ghostly echoes behind. Sophia is the only one who can break the cycle—or risk becoming nothing more than another echo haunting the island.

"Our Last Echos" is a refreshing departure from the usual literary fare, earning its four stars through its intriguing uniqueness. The novel presents a narrative that is both innovative and thought-provoking, weaving a tale that explores uncharted territory. The characters, while engaging, could use a touch more depth, but their journey through this distinctive storyline keeps you invested. The author's creativity shines through, and the world-building is commendable. While it doesn't quite reach the five-star mark due to minor character development issues, it remains a captivating and worthwhile read for those seeking a different literary experience.

slow burner “found narrative” style tale that erupts into a really gripping combination of mystery and ghost story. loved the weaving of character testimony with “video evidence” (will translate really well to a movie, one day, i imagine). at the heart of it all the spook and gore, a really tender story of a mother’s love. performance was good (tho the switch back and forth between narrators was at first a little jarring, it fit very well as the story went on). overall, a really solid story!

really solid ghost story

This book was slow at first or maybe just choppy. It was not congruent in its message or content however, about a third in it became a very interesting and complex storyline. It was a very intelligent plot and awesome characters. I would read this author again.

Interesting story line.
