From the author of the beloved national bestseller Migrations, a pulse-pounding new novel set in the wild Scottish Highlands.

Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands. She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska.

Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed—inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is found dead, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, then who did? And what will Inti do when the man she is falling for seems to be the prime suspect?

Propulsive and spell-binding, Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves—if she isn’t consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.

This is a hauntingly beautiful story like her first book Migrations. The writing is incredible and the story keeps you on the edge of your seat. There is sadness, happiness, despair, hope and growth. She’s a phenomenal writer, and the narrator was fantastic. Five stars

Amazing like Migrations

While I still prefer Migrations, this story sucked me right in. I love her writing. Excellent performance by the narrator too! Definitely recommend if you loved Migrations. I will read everything she writes!

A solid follow up to Migrations

Really enjoyed this story set mostly in Scotland, and loved learning about the wolves. I truly looked forward to getting back to this well narrated story every time I had the chance. The narrator ‘s accents and intonations, I thought, were well done. My only negative impression (and mild negative impression it is) was the changing back and forth in the time frame of “present” to “past.” It did, however, work to its advantage at times as well.

Good story set in Scotland

This was a wonderful surprise for me. I can’t remember which list made me add this book and I went in mostly cold so I didn’t know what genre this would be. I’m grateful for that because it sort of blurs a few lines. I couldn’t stop listening; I sat in my car listening in the driveway, I sat on the side of my bathtub to listen for a few more minutes after getting ready in the morning. It’s tough for me to pinpoint what I liked about this book because it kept surprising me. I recommend listening if you do audio so you can experience the accents. They really add to the sense of place.
