The pioneer of romantic suspense, Mary Stewart leads listeners on a thrilling journey through a dangerous and deadly Provence in this tale perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym.

It sounds idyllic: a leisurely drive through the sun-drenched landscape of Provence. But Charity's dream holiday turns into a nightmare when she becomes embroiled in a sinister plot to kidnap a young boy. She soon finds herself in a deadly pursuit and must uncover who to trust . . . and who to fall for.

Whenever I look back now on the strange and terrifying events of that holiday in Southern France, I remember the minutes I spent gazing at the golden arches of the Roman aqueduct over the Gardon... the last brief lull before the thunder.

Critic reviews

The terrible thirsty heat of the Provençal summer, the noise of the cicadas, the dust of the country buses... the tension mounts steadily until it reaches breaking-point . . . an excellent tale of mystery.
She set the bench mark for pace, suspense and romance - with a great dollop of escapism as the icing. (Elizabeth Buchan)
A comfortable chair and a Mary Stewart: total heaven. I'd rather read her than most other authors. (Harriet Evans)

I've been a fan of Mary Stewart for several decades, read all her books back in the 70s, and re-read them a couple of times after that. I bought this for the nostalgia, and initially wasn't sure I'd like this. But it's entirely a good, old-school romantic thriller, and the narrator's voice soon becomes *just right* for the story.

Dated, but worth listening

Loved this book for many years now, and the narrator didn't disappoint. She never does.

Emilia Fox is always a great narrator

It’s hard for me to pick one favorite from Mary Stewart, but I think this is it. Her first book; there’s something special about it that isn’t replicated with the others.

As far as narration goes, I really enjoyed it. Emilia Fox did an excellent job!

Mary Stewart has been my favorite since I discovered her when I was in high school in the 80s. Somehow I never read this one. I have been so happy to listen to her audiobooks, and this was no different. The narrator does a beautiful job, and I will be looking for her name for other books she’s read. I’m so glad I found this, the first romantic suspense. Mary was definitely the best.

Delightful

I have purchased almost 40 Audible books at this point. This Audible version of The Moonspinners and the version of Madam Will You Talk are the very best in terms of the voice matching the character of the heroine and overall delivery. I love them! I wish I could say the same for every Audible book - particularily some of the Georgette Heyer Audibles. Some of those I have abandoned early on. I highly recommend the Audible for The Moonspinners and Madame Will You Talk.

Perfect!
