How did they expect her to play the game if she didn't even understand the rules?

Abandoned as an infant, Quinn Faust is about to discover she's not just a normal human being.

Bounced from foster home to foster home, she came to rely on her street smarts, martial arts skills, and the tiny silver amulet that was the only link to her lost family. Hired by a video game company to test new Virtual Reality gear to train soldiers, Quinn quickly learns there's more to the game than they told her.

Now strange happenings reveal a world hidden in the shadows, the existence of supernatural creatures, magic, and mystical powers. Does Quinn have what it takes to claim the birthright of long lost Hunter clans?

I am not a fan of hidden world/war stories. They aren't realistic to me. and the cultists lack a solid hook. any gamer and most workers would not stand for a stick only motivation system. if while presenting their front the cultists had a reward and incentive system, it would have gone a long way to making them believable. especially when you find they aren't all possessed.

doesn't work for me

It is very hard to listen too, not engaging at all, and bad narration makes it so much worse.

Very tropey, and narrator makes it so much worse

The “RPG” element feels tacked on as a way to include it in the genre for marketing purposes. There are no leveling system or abilities described and the entire game part is a pretext to draw the main character into the nefarious plots of the villains, then basically discarded. Also, HUD should be pronounced “hud”, not the narrator’s version H. U. D.

The main characters are kind of stupid. Very one-note. No awe, or internal conflict upon discovering magic, the supernatural, and demons are real, just oh, “Okay, lemme do some then, and even though I have no idea how, I’ll just wish for a half second while scared and it works in a way nobody else’s can because of a necklace. Gotta fight these demon worshippers as if I didn’t have the mental faculties of a child. Look, the basement of this demon-infested office complex has a cave system at the back of one of the rooms that I can hide in, go spelunking, and escape! The demon-possessed patsy is basically just a regular person with extra senses and higher physical durability, but my teenage body is strong enough beat them up and kill them without real injury.”

Everything about this story feels like supernatural fan fiction written by an average middle or high schooler, but at least there weren’t any pathetic romantic elements.

Too many plot devices
