Betrayal, war, and the risks of loyalty collide in the epic conclusion of the First Argentines series by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Lady’s Ransom.

Ransom Barton has served three Argentine kings. The new successor to the throne is the ruthless Jon-Landon, a fallible strategist when it comes to war. After losing against the Occitanian armies, the king forces Ransom to bear the blame and removes him from the council. But Jon-Landon isn’t yet through with humbling the honorable knight of Ceredigion.

When a retaliatory battle succeeds, Jon-Landon invites Ransom back into his circle. Though Ransom’s Fountain magic is made stronger by his fealty, he’s once again forced to make a terrible choice. And this time, Ransom’s wife, Claire, and their sons could pay the price for Ransom’s loyalty.

But as tensions between Ceredigion and Occitania reignite and alliances at court begin to crumble, a desperate Jon-Landon discovers his only ally is the knight he betrayed. With the future of Kingfountain hanging in the balance, Ransom agrees to help. And as secret enemies reveal their endgame, Ransom knows that he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice for the survival of the Argentine dynasty.

Critic reviews

“The inevitable showdown between two Fountain-blessed antagonists brings this excellent four-part series to a close. Wheeler has woven a grand story based on the actual adventures of William Marshall in the time of King Stephen I of England, recasting the basic themes of King Arthur legends: loyalty and courage in the face of adversity.”Booklist

I just finished the last in this book series and already I miss my Lord Ransom. Ingeniously crafted through the writings of Jeff Wheeler, Ransom and Claire became an integral part of my decompression time driving home after work. I couldn't wait to listen daily. A well written action packed, intriguing, magical, and historical love story, it leaves the reader wanting for nothing no matter their age. Looking forward to the next series.

I always want stories to go on forever and so I appreciated how this played out as a conclusion yet only a piece of the larger world the author has created.

A solid ending to the series

Books are always hard to review because what tickles one’s fancy may not another’s. For me this was a great series to just get lost in while listening. I don’t know if reading is different but I find that narrators can make or break a book. This narrator was great!

Someone mentioned the awful ending. I didn’t find it awful. I wish people would elaborate more. Why was it awful? I found it befitting to the times and the series itself. And I am a serious cynical eye-roller which I didn’t do in this series - if that helps you choose - LOL. In the end, to each his own. But I would listen to it again - and again.

Love the whole series
