Parno McLeod has managed to stave off disaster for now, but his kingdom is still besieged by the Imperial forces of the Norland Empire.

Assuming command of the entire Soulan military in place of his deposed brother, Therron, Parno must turn Soulan's fortunes around before his home is completely overrun and his people destroyed or enslaved. The author does a fine job with character development as well as story development. I think I’ve bought everything N.C. Reed has written and enjoyed every one of them. Really hoping he continues/finishes the stories such as Odd Billy Todd, Fire from the Sky and the Parno saga. All of these remain open for much more. All books have been narrated very well. Good range of character voices and cadence. Looking forward to more.

I'm glad this series continues and I dread reaching the final book! N C Reed has become my favorite author, and his narrators are the BEST. Now, on to book 3.
