About this listen

Winner of 2021 Voice Arts Award, Audiobook Narration — Fantasy

"He thinks he's a wizard," they said.

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year.

But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Great story - perfect narration

The first time I read this book it was with a Kindle. I loved the story. Seeing it available as an audio book, I enjoyed the second time even more. I hope this is the beginning of a series.

Such a gentle story

Another reviewer called this a gentle story and I agree. I am hoping for a sequel. But the narrator! I couldn’t believe it was just one voice artist.

One of my favorite books again!

*original review March 2020 for ebook version, and it still applies! Everything I said is true!
Nathan Lowell really stepped out of his comfort zone with this Jeeves and Wooster style Urban Fantasy, leaving the beloved Deep Dark (Space) to write about Wizards and Pixies! But seriously, this story's heart is still pure Nathan Lowell... and I love it! It's one of my favorite books so far this year!

Just to give you some perspective, I've read around 60 books (novels and short stories) so far, and of the 4 books that landed as my top favorites, 2 of 'em were written by Nathan Lowell! Yes, he's that good!

**My 2nd read through... What a delightful way to spend a few hours! And Tom Taylorson was the perfect narrator to give Roger Mulligan his own voice in this fantastic performance!

Favorite lines:
“Don’t mind the cars,” he said, grinning at her over his shoulder and opening the door.
“Are you kidding me, Mulligan?” She froze inside the door, staring at the lineup of vehicles. “What’s that? A million dollars on twelve tires?”
“I have no idea.” (was the reply)

And: "I have suspicions, but none I’d hang a hat on."

Engrossed the whole time

I could not stop listening. I have a feeling if I listen again I'd hear things I missed the first time. A well crafted story and a good introduction to a new, magical world that I think I am going to enjoy.

A pleasant surprise

I like audible for intelligent companionable company as I do other things.

This book provided a decent plot, characters you can like (or dislike) as appropriate, a magical setting, a little amusing humor, and people making good choices. Plots. Possibilities. Lots of room to dig in for additional stories, which I hope do come along.

I enjoyed it more than many I have in a long time.

Thank you to those involved in writing it and bringing it to life.

Good Story and Performance

This is the first book by this author I have read. I liked the concept quite a bit. The reader was good, although he might want to work on the female voices (they were all quite similar, but not annoyingly so). The story was interesting, and I hope there’s a sequel. I would recommend this to other readers.

A Feel-Good Story

A feel-good sort of story I will listen to again and again. Ending predictable but feels right.

Absolutely wonderful

I picked this up on a whim. This is not something I would normally listen to and I wasn't sure that I would like it. Not only did I like it I absolutely fell in love with it. I don't want to give too much away but it's a great story about not only the Magical World, but also about people in general. Do yourself a favor and pick this up.

Well-written, fairly boring story

I feel like a lot recently when I discuss books I have read, I say it was a good story idea, but not well-executed. This book is kind of the opposite of that. The story itself is fairly boring with a bland and easily defeated nemesis. There are no big twists and it's somewhat hard to believe that the villain had any chance of winning in the end. The book was quite well written, however. There were a few too many repeated turns of phrase for my liking - if you hear a phrase once and think it's a unique way to express an idea and then hear the same phrase several more times... well, it detracts. That's the kind of thing an editor should have caught and fixed. I will probably get and read future books in this series in order to give it a chance. Perhaps the future books will be more exciting since this was a foundational beginning to a series and it wasn't unpleasant to read. Time will tell.
