Editorial reviews

Editors Select, May 2013 - This was my first time listening to a legal thriller, and I can safely say I’m hooked. I had always shied away from the genre, assuming that the plots were too fantastical – but this story has a ripped-from-the-headlines feel, creating a relevancy that will attract both newbies like me and established thriller fans. Mitzner delivers a character driven narrative, while seamlessly blending romance, criminal law, and suspense, keeling me guessing until the very end. Kevin T. Collins does a marvelous job narrating – the emotion that he pours into each character captivated me from the start. I felt all of the triumphs and setbacks of the case, and I found myself deeply invested in its outcome. I really hope that this duo works together again, but in the meantime I’m going hunting for more from both the author and the narrator. —Katie, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

The second electrifying thriller from the "gifted writer" (Publishers Weekly) and author of A Conflict of Interest.

A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Critic reviews

"Mitzner's courtroom drama is Grisham-like in suspenseful before-the-bench action....a wicked ride, with more loops and flips than Coney Island's Cyclone." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Ah, the crucible of the courtroom! Adam Mitzner understands its appeal so very well. Devotees of legal suspense will find themselves happily at home, zinging with the intrigue, reeling with the twists, and ultimately well fed with a satisfying (if shocking) resolution. And if you've been away from the fictional halls of justice for too long, A CASE OF REDEMPTION is where you need to come back." (Jamie Mason, author of Three Graves Full)

I Don't Agree With the Reviews

I just finished listening to A Case of Redemption and rushed to the computer to write this review. No synopsis here - just my feelings about the book.

I did not enjoy this book and I would never recommend this book to a friend. I actually almost gave it 2 stars. I had read many positive reviews so I went in with high expectations. I keep wondering if I listened to the same book everyone else did. I get that books are a very personal matter. I wish I could explain more clearly (without giving anything away) why I felt I wasted my time.

I wanted to quit the book many times but hung in there because the last chapter was suppose to be so "shocking" - yet I found nothing shocking about it. This is coming from someone who rarely can figure out an ending.

This was not a page turner. I wasn't filled with suspense. I didn't find the characters likeable. The judge was so over the top - I almost fast forwarded through some of the court scenes.

I will stay clear of Collins as a narrator. His voice was forced, irritating and he over enunciated. Although, I think he did switch between characters well and had no issues with how he did female voices.

If you want to read a good crime/court room or suspense novel - stick with the likes of Grisham,Turow, Wm Landay or M. Connelly.

Good Story, Well Performed

My second novel by Mitzner and happy to report both were well done. Collins delivered the story with just the right amount of inflections to add to the shock and awe scenes and yet keep the story believable and dramatic. I've listened to some very average novels lately and this one was a nice upgrade. Five stars don't come easy from me, but I think Mitzner deserves the award...hope you agree. Cheers

Wow! I didn't see it coming! What a great story!

Don't be fooled by the early chapters of this novel; it is NOT what it seems. It is much better than what it seems! This is the story of an attorney who has lost everything in his life and how one case redeems him and starts his life anew. His court room activities are central and his relationships with other lawyers likewise. However, the story has some devious twists and turns that the listener can't possibly see coming. . . yet in the end, they are quite logical and believable.

The narration leaves a little something to be desired. . . Collins' voice is a bit pretentious and seems affected at times, but get beyond that because the story is a great one.

More than just a legal thriller

Mitzner sets the emotional bar high at the start of this story. Daniel has lost his wife and daughter in a drunk driving accident while he's too busy working to join them on vacation. The Daniel we meet as the story opens is a former lawyer, a drunk. It's amazing he even makes it to the party where he meets NIna. But meet Nina he does, and she sets him on a whole new path.

The issues in the story are real (violence in gangsta rap is just the start of it), and yet the love story piece feels somewhat old-fashioned. The love story is probably the weakest part of the story, but the overall plot and Kevin's Collin's remarkable narration make up for a lot.

Great summer listen.

Predictable, but not a complete disappointment

For a lover of lawyer-thrillers, this was a ordinary book. Plot was predictable. Nevertheless kept me interested with the style and characters. More like a well made B Class movie.

Great Plot Twists in the final hour

I've read two of Mitzner three books so far. This one and Conflict of Interest. Different characters but almost exact same "type of character / setting". Disenchanted Manhattan lawyer in a dehumanizing "Big Firm" / white shoe environment. Sound familiar to Grisham, Turow fans?

Both stories were solid and kept my interest with solid narrator. What the author does in both is "throws the reader/listener a curveball" in the last hour. The verdict comes in on "the big case" but then we learn "what we thought was, wasn't".

I have the 3rd book in my queue. Again, he uses "a formula" but it works.

Watch out for bruised and bleeding

A good friend of mine used to say "watch out for bruised and bleeding," meaning someone who is still in too much pain from the last heartbreak is not a good candidate for a relationship. It's hard to say more without giving too much away. I do think the author effectively used vulnerability as a motivator for more than one of the characters.

Several characters, especially the ADA and the judge, were one-dimensional and unbelievable.

Several reviewers have said the ending was predictable and obvious. I don't usually spend too much time trying to figure out the twist, so maybe that's why I missed it.

I didn't love the narrator--too earnest.

It was a good "read"--not great, but good. I recommend it.

Very readable

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

It depends; if they are like me and occasionally like a light, easy read...then yes.

If you’ve listened to books by Adam Mitzner before, how does this one compare?

Haven't listened to anything else by Mitzner.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator was fine - I'm not sure there was much more he could have done with this text.

Did A Case of Redemption inspire you to do anything?

Nope.

Any additional comments?

Hard to believe the central premise of this, which was that anyone would consider the case open-and-shut. The prosecution had no murder weapon, no physical evidence putting the suspect at the scene, and no clear motive. The only "evidence" against the suspect was a song which could, if you listened very selectively, sound like a threat to commit a crime (and not even the precise crime that was committed).

I would expect any defense lawyer worth his salt to knock that out of the park, but everyone acted like the suspect was completely doomed from the start. The main character is sympathetic, but does start to seem rather dense once you figure out what's really going on and he takes several more chapters to catch up.

A good story, but WAY too much boring legalese

I liked the characters and the performance, and loved the story. However, have you ever asked someone what time it is, only to be bored with the details of how to make a clock?

This courtroom drama contained WAY too much detail. Don't even compare this author with Grisham, who knows just the right balance in and out of the courtroom.

That said, the story was good, the narrator was good, and I would cautiously recommend this book. After all, there are probably many out there who relish the details of clock-making.
