“A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf” is a diary of his 1,000-mile journey on foot from Indiana to the Gulf of Mexico. Setting out to explore the untamed landscapes of the South, he passes through Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida, right after the Civil War, masterfully documenting the diverse plants, animals, and scenery he encounters, and life in the mid-1800s.
Throughout the journey, Muir sleeps under the stars, faces harsh weather, and meets all kinds of people along the way. He describes the beauty of forests, rivers, and swamps, as well as the struggles of the poor communities he comes across. Muir’s writings show his awe of nature and his concern for how humans are damaging it. This adventure helped shape his ideas about protecting the environment, which he later became famous for as a leading figure in the conservation movement.
