En 1947 apareció en la revista Trabajos y Días un poema titulado "La barca nevada". Lo firmaba Carmiña Martín Gaite, y suponía el debut de quien buscaba aún su voz, e incluso su nombre. Luego se sucederían los libros en otros géneros, pero Carmen Martín Gaite mantuvo siempre su fidelidad a la poesía. Siguió escribiéndola —así lo demuestran sus cuadernos—, publicándola —con las ediciones ampliadas de A rachas— y recitándola, en cafés y centros culturales, en la grabación digirida por Alberto Pérez que aquí recuperamos.
La poesía ocupa un lugar central en la obra de Carmen Martín Gaite. Así lo defiende esta edición de A rachas, al cuidado de José Teruel, que incorpora también una selección de sus collages. La poesía de Martín Gaite «ilumina elementos aún no explorados», nos recuerda Teruel; el lenguaje y el pensamiento poéticos guían la prosa de la autora, y muchos de sus poemas comparten temas y atmósferas con algunas de sus narraciones. Una poesía apegada al tiempo, a su paso o a su pérdida, agridulce y también lúdica, consciente de la tradición.
