Publisher's summary

Awakening in a bleak landscape as scarred as her body, Cass Dollar vaguely recalls surviving something terrible. Having no idea how many weeks have passed, she slowly realizes the horrifying truth: Ruthie has vanished. And with her, nearly all of civilization. Where once-lush hills carried cars and commerce, the roads today see only cannibalistic Beaters - people turned hungry for human flesh by a government experiment gone wrong.

In a broken, barren California, Cass will undergo a harrowing quest to get Ruthie back. Few people trust an outsider, let alone a woman who became a zombie and somehow turned back, but she finds help from an enigmatic outlaw, Smoke. Smoke is her savior, and her safety. For the Beaters are out there. And the humans grip at survival with their trigger fingers. Especially when they learn that she and Ruthie have become the most feared, and desired, of weapons in a brave new world.

Critic reviews

"Littlefield turns what could be just another zombie apocalypse into a thoughtful and entertaining exploration of many themes, including genetic engineering, social collapse, and motherhood.... [She] has a gift for pacing, her adroit and detailed world-building going down easy amid page-turning action and evocative, sensual, harrowing descriptions that bring every paragraph of this thriller to life." Excellent!

Great story. Kept me in suspense til the very end. Relatable characters, realistic and believable for an apocalyptic story.

Another solid Zombie thriller from Littlefield

Where does Aftertime rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

There were plenty enought zombies for me and mayhem and romance. The fort becomes more realized each outing, but no place is ever safe with the dead walking. Can't wait for number 3.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Aftertime?

The chase of the rescuing mini van ending at the bridge.

Which scene was your favorite?

Rescuing the two girls from the truck in the ditch.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The rich Texas bitch was surely well rounded.

Any additional comments?

There will always be the evil living, too, wanting to take from those who work hard.

Excellent book, perfect narrator.

Though the infected are called "beaters" rather than "zombies" they are close enough to the traditional zombie to satisfy most zombie fans, but different enough to please those who like something a little nontraditional. The book also demonstrates that even after the appocalypse life still goes on, and people are still people. For example, the main character is a recovering adict. The appocalypse doesn't make that go away. It just adds something else to a plate that is already pretty full. There are a few episodes of fighting the beaters, but not nearly as much as some zombie books have. There are times when I really like and sympathize with Cas, and times when I would like to wring her neck. That is what makes a good book, in my opinion, when you feel for, and with the characters. I highly recommend this book, and the two others in the series. Ellen Archer does a phenomenal job with the narration too.

Great Ideas!

May be some spoilers. The story has great and I do mean GREAT potential, but the writer seems to be trying to force the story along. It was annoying that everyone is just so accepting of this person when all they talk about is raiders and bandits and zombies, it was too convenient. And the use of post apocalyptic terms everyone seems to use, like "Aftertime," is normally reserved for the second or third generation of the apocalypse. The narrator is great! But the narrator should be used for a younger character, not for a strong woman character as is portrayed in this book. I am trying to finish.

False Advertisement!!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Those who like watching Lifetime channel & reading romance novels!! So sad 3/4 through the book an not one death! Nobody eaten by these so called zombies in this miserable excuse for a zombie book!! Dances with wolves is a scarier story! If the author put half the effort into the zombies of the book as they did detailing the sexual encounters ( from her point of view guys if ya get my point) then maybe it could be called a Bad zombie story! But as is I'd say romance/ sex novel with sick people outside the house.

Has Aftertime turned you off from other books in this genre?

This don't belong in zombie genre! It's a rip off to be labeled as such

How could the performance have been better?

If someone died, if someone got eaten??

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger, dissapointment

Any additional comments?

I beg for a refund or at least a free credit to get a real book, This book sucks! Doubt I'll finish
