Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

Great Finish

Started off slow but really picked up as the story progressed. I really enjoyed the how the book gave closure and didn't leave me to wonder what happened.

Disappointing

I feel like this book series just went downhill. I enjoyed "Divergent" quite a bit. But this one was boring, predictable and just plain dumb. I actually really like Galvin and Standford as performers. They are versatile and an easy listen. However, the story leaves much to be desired.

I didn't care for the ending

I'm not going to say much for obvious reasons, but I didn't like the choices the author made in wrapping up this trilogy. I felt the path she chose was maybe a valid option, but totally unnecessary. I gave the other two installments in this series much higher marks. It's a good read - and clearly made for Hollywood.

Allegiant was good.

I was surprised that Tris died. With that said, it was still a good story. I wonder how the movie will differ from the book. I guess I will know soon enough, going to see movie this weekend. I hope it is as good as the book.

Not a bad ending

My least favorite in the series. Still a good read with lots of twists. Can't say much more without spoiling it.

Great Final Book For A Great Series

I really enjoyed this book, and thought it wrapped up the series very well. I totally disagree with the other reviewers who said it was a terrible ending to the series. They must have been expecting a classic "Hollywood ending," and that simply wasn't possible in a book (series) like this. Overall, as much as I enjoyed the Hunger Games series (and it may be unfair to compare the two series based only on the grounds that they are both dystopian YA novels about teenagers who live in societies broken into rigid groups), I think this series was superior. I'm left still thinking about the final book, and a story that lingers with you is always a sign of a great book. The narrators were also very good. Sometimes the Tris narrator could be a little grating, but overall she was good. I thought the new narrator who read for Four was great. Perfect voice for the part (though only when he was narrating his own character; his narration of female characters wasn't terrible, but wasn't great either -- probably because his own voice is just too low to begin with). 4 to 4.25 stars.

Sad Ending

Overall an excellent trilogy. Had it's share of dark overtones but sometimes that gave an edge to the story. The ending still has me in shock.

Ummm....DEPRESSING!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I loved the fact that you got an insight to what Tobias was thinking, but it also made me not like him as much. The main characters had a thin relationship throughout the series, with hardly any real interaction and get to know you conversations. also I just didnt care what was outside the fence because it was a plot line that just emerged out of no where at the end of book 2. Once outside the fence it turned into a whole different monster with the players even seeming different. Without giving anything away I have to say that the ending while neat and tidy was depressing and after enduring all the boredom of outside the fence life I felt it was unfair to the readers not to get a nice happy ending. The narration was very nicely done but the story fell flat after a good start.
