About this listen

The brooding, illegitimate son of a duke meets his match in the determined woman hired to transform him into a gentleman from USA Today best-selling author Christi Caldwell - perfect for fans of Bridgerton.

Rafe Audley lives to thwart his father, the duke of Bentley. The ne’er-do-well who abandoned his children claims he wants to make up for his failures, but Rafe only cares about protecting the people of his mining community and providing for his three siblings, who've been his sole responsibility since childhood. So far, Rafe has turned away the duke's man of affairs, solicitor, and other interlopers, until the clever duke sends the unlikeliest of people to convince Rafe to join English High Society - a bold and intriguing woman.

Edwina Dalrymple has never failed a charge. She's quite adept at successfully transforming young women of the gentry and daughters of newly minted lords to take their place in society. Taming a bastard son of a duke will be child's play, plus this job promises to enhance her reputation within the ton. All she has to do is fetch the wayward Rafe and groom him to be presentable to Polite Society.

As the tenacious teacher and her domineering, stubborn, refuses-to-be-taught pupil engage in a fiery battle of wills, their chemistry ignites and the true lesson becomes clear: Opposites attract and hearts must be heard.

Critic reviews

"Along Came a Lady is exactly what I needed to read right now. Edwina and Rafe’s love story is ribboned with subtleties about gender roles and class expectations that make this novel both thoughtful and delightful all at once.” (Jodi Picoult, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Book of Two Ways)

"Christi Caldwell's crisp, sparkling writing is infused with emotion, passion, and a belief in the healing power of love. This is terrific Regency romance!" (Amanda Quick, New York Times best-selling author)

"Emotional, funny, and filled with passion - everything I want in a romance.” (Lorraine Heath, New York Times best-selling author of The Duchess Hunt)

Unique storyline and great chatacters

This is my first Christi Caldwell book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And Timothy Campbell is always the best in my opinion. The storyline was very different than the ones I normally read and I enjoyed that uniqueness. Complete with a honorable hero, a quirky heroine and a HEA. I look forward to discovering more of Christi Caldwell's books.

Unique premise, humdrum tomance

This book was a 4.25. It ended abruptly right after the resolution. If it had had a good epilogue that could have bumped it up to 4.5 stars.
Ms Carlyle’s writing is very good, The characters were interesting. Definitely a novel idea to have a coal miner as hero. (He also happened to be the illegitimate son of a duke.)
The scenes about the coal mining town and the H’s family dynamics we’re very engaging. I felt the book lost some steam after they got to London. Not as much sexual tension/chemistry between the H & h as I would have preferred.
It was a solid 4 star read, but I’m not likely to reread it.

This series should be good

This is a delightful story with two strong main characters. I enjoyed it. The narration by Tim Campbell is his usual tad overly dramatic but it wasn’t distracting.

Well Done

Beautiful story highlighting the masks the Hero & Heroine wore & why, the masks they were expected to wear, and the similarities/differences of the masks worn by the cou try & city societies they knew. It was done humorously and with such skill that the romance and love developed believably as they both revealed how equally matched they actually were. The story set in a backdrop of each of their parents irresponsibility, regret, selfishness, neglect, live, hopes, failures, & foolishness only highlighted the true love the Hero & Heroine shared & what they did about it. We are left with a story of hope, love, belonging, & imaginations that include this couples lifetime of loving duels with each other. Nicely done by both the author & the narrator who brought this story to life with great skill.

Excellent listening

I liked the first book in this series, but I LOVED this one. Rafe and Edwina's story is the best of romances. Rafe is tall, dark, handsome, strong and dependable...the perfect hero. Edwina is smart, clever and tenacious and strong enough to be the perfect foil for Rafe. The only thing lacking in this book is the epilogue. But, I'm hoping to learn more about their perfect love when I read the next book in the series.
