Publisher's summary

Diving into a revolutionary new video game, Marcus and his friends escape a stagnant society, entering into a world that defies their wildest imaginations. But from the moment that he logs in, Marcus finds himself separated from his friends and thrown into a remote village under attack by a horde of goblins.

Forced into battle, Marcus rallies the beleaguered villagers and, with their help, manages to drive off the invading creatures. With the village in ruins and their supplies spoiled, the survivors desperately turn to Marcus for help in rebuilding the village.

Realizing that this game is nothing like he's ever played before, Marcus is swept up into a whirlwind of adventure as he struggles to defend his new home, quickly finding that marauding goblins are the least of his problems.

Good by LitRPG Standards

Any additional comments?

So far reading through LitRPG series, I have been very disappointed by the quality of writing. Either the authors cling to clichés like a lifeboat or just have no idea how to create likable characters. But Luke Chmilenko did surprisingly well in the first book of this series. There were a few times that the main character became an idiot to forward the plot and a smattering of "close-calls", but overall the story was well written and paced. The narrator is a bit limited on voices, but does adequately to separate the characters enough to know who is who. The loot readouts were much less painful than in other books as well. I have hope that the second book will not fall off in quality as bad as most series, but we will see.

Awesome

I loved this book! I was a little skeptical because of how great "Ready Player One" was but this book was great. I was very happy with it and can't wait till the next addition comes out!

The story starts off slow, but gets better.

First things first, let me say that Luke Daniels as the narrator is nothing short of amazing! I like litrpg and this is not the first one I have listened to, hell its not even the 20th one I have listened to. I like to get the longer books, as I feel like I get more for my money. This new trend to call 5.5 hours a book is a ridiculous money grab, anything less than 8 hours should be free! Anyway, my point is that at almost 18 hours, the length of this book was just right for my tastes. That said, this book starts off extremely dry and a little boring, like stereo instructions dry and I came close to giving up on the book. However, the narrator is so good I decided to give the book a chance and I am glad I did. Once they got in game and the “real story” started, it turned out to be a pretty decent book. I would say it was kind of a mashup of World of Warcraft, Skyrim and Ready Player One. All in all it was good entertainment and I will most likely keep listening to the rest of the series. Did I mention how awesome the narrator was?

BUTTAH!!!

First off Luke Daniels brings the book to life! Its a fun ride! I don't like to discuss what happens in the book but if your into the RPG genre then this book is for you! I read one of the reviews on here that says profanity warning and there is profanity, it is also an adult book. Most of this genre is about killing monsters and other players but thats ok? and profanity is not? Hell i would be cussing my A** off if half the stuff in this book happened to me!
An amazing book you wont regret!

Epic adventure

Great story! Luke Daniels was Luke Daniels, he can do no wrong, however...

The story is instantly engaging. The character development is great! The pace was great! Excitedly anticipating the second installment.
