Geboren wurde Anton Tschechow (auch Čechov) 1860. Sein Großvater war Leibeigener gewesen, sein Vater ein kleiner Kaufmann, der Bankrott machte. Die Familie musste ihr Haus in Südrussland verkaufen und zog nach Moskau. Anton blieb als Dienstbote im Haus, das seiner Familie gehört hatte. Dank eines Stipendiums begann er drei Jahre später in Moskau Medizin zu studieren. Unter Pseudonym schrieb er kleine Erzählungen für Satirezeitschriften. Auch als praktizierender Arzt schrieb er weiter, mit wachsendem Erfolg. Zeitgleich mit der Aushändigung seines Ärztediploms 1884 erscheint sein erster Erzählungsband. Im Winter des Jahres treten erstmals Lungenblutungen auf. 1901 heiratete er die Schauspielerin Olga Knipper. Sie lebten wegen der Theaterverpflichtungen Olgas selten zusammen und schrieben sich viele Briefe. Nachdem er 1900 zum Mitglied der Sektion schöngeistiger Literatur bei der Akademie der Wissenschaften gewählt wird, beginnt er mit neuer Kraft an den „Drei Schwestern“ zu schreiben. 1903 hat er wieder eine schwere Lungenblutung. Er überlebt nur knapp. Trotz Warnungen seines Arztes nimmt er fast täglich an den Proben seines neuen Stückes teil. Am 2. Juli 1904 stirbt der 44-jährige Tschechow im deutschen Badenweiler, wo er sich einer Kur unterziehen sollte, an den Folgen mehrerer Herzanfälle. Seine letzten Worte waren: „Ich habe so lange keinen Champagner mehr getrunken.“
