Eleven-year-old Elijah is the first child born into freedom in Buxton, Canada, a settlement of runaway slaves just over the border from Detroit. He’s best known in his hometown as the boy who made a memorable impression on Frederick Douglass. But things change when a former slave steals money from Elijah’s friend, who has been saving to buy his family out of captivity in the South. Elijah embarks on a dangerous journey to America in pursuit of the thief, and he discovers firsthand the unimaginable horrors of the life his parents fled–a life from which he’ll always be free, if he can find the courage to get back home.©2007 Christopher Paul Curtis; (P)2008 Random House, Inc. It was amazing. All I think it needs is a huge bowl of popcorn and a movie about it.

How is this so good.

I read Elijah of Buxton last year and just adored the story and history of Buxton. I was very pleased when we found the audio version - the narrator is very animated and entertaining.

Great story - great narration - a win - win

I never finished reading g the book so when I found the audible version I was extremely excited. I finished it in 2 days.

I love the story. I teared up quite often listening to the story. I feel so lucky I was not born back in those days. I often think of the slaves that were born and died as a slave. never seeing a day of freedom. Their whole life they were mistreated and that's all they knew. All of this just because of the color of their skin. it just doesn't make since.

Excellent audible book.

I loved this book

The story itself is phenomenal and the narration is perfect. My only issue is with how the chapters are labeled vs. the actual chapters. For example, the audio that is labeled as Chapter 1 encompasses from Chapter 1 in the book to the middle of Chapter 3. The audio that is labeled Chapter 2 encompasses from the middle of Chapter 3 in the book to the end of Chapter 6. I use audiobooks for my students with disabilities who need audio support. This labeling makes it very difficult for them.

Great book/narration; terrible chapter labeling
