Critic reviews

"If you're tired of standard psychological parlance and still frustrated with your quality of life, this book can be a godsend." (Martha Beck, columnist for O Magazine)
"Trying to 'change' negative thoughts through cognitive gymnastics is like trying to win a war single-handedly. Why waste a life trying the impossible? In Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, advocate Dr. Steven Hayes escorts the mildly depressed, angry, and anxiety prone through a new approach to handling suffering - universal human suffering caused by language's illusions. Rather than fighting off bad thoughts and feelings with internal pep talks, Hayes beautifully explains how to embrace those pessimistic and foreboding mental voices (much like welcoming home one's cranky, play-worn children), 'defuse' them with respectful attention, and commit to leading a purposeful life that includes their occasional ranting." This is one of the best books we've ever listened to as a family. We age from 8 to 53, and we all loved it. In fact, our dad is listening to it again for I think the thirteenth time. It's just plain ole good, clean fun with mystery, mayhem and magic.

Good for whole family

Interesting concepts but hard to appreciate in audiobook form because the narration is too monotonous and dry, and there are so many required workbook exercises. I've certainly experienced many poor narrations listening to so many audiobooks, but this one is particularly mind numbing. Aside from that, there is an extremely large amount of suggested exercises throughout every chapter of the book that require you to have the accompanying workbook appendix. Since you're basically going to have to print a small book yourself in order to get anything out of this audiobook, you would be better off just buying a hard copy.

Hard copy is definitely the way to go here

I enjoyed the book, I never did therapies, this book helped, I even left chamomile tea, ashwaghanda, now I know techniques to deal with my anxiety and get through each day. Walking 30min every morning and these techniques, 30min after dinner walk, helped me sleep better and reduce my stress and anxiety by 90 percent.

This helped my anxiety 90 percent decrease.

Book somewhat dry but gives the overall explanation and application of ACT. Several techniques were found to be helpful.

Definitely layman’s for public
