A Christy Award winner and RITA finalist, best-selling author Deeanne Gist crafts inspirational fiction of the highest order. Set in Texas at the turn of the century, this historical gem finds Georgie Gail as a tough-as-nails switchboard operator trying to make a living in a man’s world. So when the handsome Luke Palmer is hired as her colleague, she’s anything but pleased. What Georgie doesn’t know is that Luke is an undercover Texas Ranger chasing a gang of train robbers - and they’re headed her way.

Slow story. Put me to sleep several times. Played it to the end but it never got better.

No action

Not my favorite of Deeanne Gist’s. There were such high emotions over birds and hats. And I could’ve done without the feminist rhetoric, although I guess they rectified that at the end. But other than those things it was a nice story. The narration was fine. My only criticism is that the voices for the men were just as high-pitched as the voices for the women. It was kind of distracting.

Any additional comments?

I love birds - have a bird garden of my own, in fact - but as disgusting as the bird parts fashion trend was, Billie's bird obsession was over the top and frequently tedious. I did mostly enjoy the development of the hero & heroine, as well as their relationship, but it took some patience. The history in Gist's books is always interesting and the romance is technically clean but does get a bit racy. I enjoyed the way the story wrapped up, at least, & it helped soothe the bumps endured to get there.

I gave it a 4, but it's probably closer to a 3&1/2.

Premise was great but the story was a mixed bag
