About this listen
A revolutionary approach to the techniques of working with horses, by a renowned instructor.
In Horses Never Lie, renowned horse trainer Mark Rashid challenges the conventional wisdom of "alpha leadership" and teaches the listener to become a "passive leader" - a counterpart to the kind of horse other members of a herd choose to associate with and to follow. Applying Rashid’s principles and techniques helps cultivate horse personalities that are responsive and dependable regardless of the rider. Reliving Rashid’s experiences with him, you will come to feel the same sort of compassion and appreciation for your horses that you do for the people in your life. This new edition features added introductory notes for each chapter that contribute to a more complete understanding of Rashid’s methods and philosophy.

Story
Many horse trainers, even those who espouse the so-called natural horsemanship approach, take the position that horses who fail to obey a human's request are doing so as much out of perversity as ignorance. That's not Mark Rashid's view. In his words, "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all. More times than not, it's just the horse expressing the way he feels at that particular moment in time....

Astonished, Monty realized that he could train horses by using their language, speaking to them in ways that would form trust and understanding. Developing techniques based on what he learned from the horses around him, Monty embarked on a remarkable career - one that would bring him international fame as the real Horse Whisperer.

Editorial reviews
Narrator Dan Lawson's tenor voice has a naturally affable quality, and his performance of Horses Never Lie expressively conveys the friendly wisdom behind renowned horse trainer Mark Rashid's methods and philosophy. Rashid's experiences with horses are narrated in a companionable manner, and his techniques in cultivating passive leadership with horses are easy to understand. Lawson does not overemphasize the audiobook's lessons, choosing to apply Rashid's maxim that the best way to guide is to let horses - or, in this case, listeners - figure things out on their own.

He calls all their geldings George and their mares Jewel and warns her not to get attached. The horses are there on the ranch to be sold, plain and simple. But with all the stress at school (the Big Four - Linda, Mary A., Mary N., Joan - have turned against her) and home (nothing feels right with her brother, Danny, gone), Abby can't help but seek comfort in the Georges and the Jewels, who greet her every day with soft nickers.

Story
Everyone knows a woman who loves horses. Maybe she rides whenever she can find the time, maybe she rode as a young girl, or maybe she just devoured the Black Stallion books. Twenty years ago, Nancy Shulins let go of one dream - having a child - and worked toward another one: learning to ride and, eventually, having her own horse. In the process, she learned what it means to love another being so much you can’t imagine life without them.

Jo Anne Normile was not supposed to keep the foal, an exuberant Thoroughbred with only a few white hairs on his reddish-brown forehead. But she fell in love with the young horse, who had literally been born into her arms. The breeder finally said she could keep the colt, whom she nicknamed "Baby" - but only if she raced him. It was difficult to take Baby away from the safety of his pasture. But Normile had made a promise.

The son of prominent Canadian equestrians, Maynard decided to spend the next year as a "working student." In the horse industry, working students aspire to become professional riders or trainers, and willingly trade labor for hands-on education.

As he watched a mare tame a rebellious colt, Monty saw that she was speaking to it through eye and body movements. Astonished, Monty realized that he could train horses by using their language, speaking to them in ways that would form trust and understanding. Developing techniques based on what he learned from the horses around him, Monty embarked on a remarkable career - one that would bring him international fame as the real Horse Whisperer.

Good, instructive stories But poor narration
This book is a collection of short stories highlighting Mark's training philosophy. It does not give specific instruction on the how-to but, instead, these are pleasant stories about the background of each horse and how Mark uses his Aikido philosophies to communicate with and understand the horse psychic. It teaches a unique, kind way of training and communicating.
I found it irritating, however, that the narrator was so stilted in his delivery and kept using the 'long a' like in the word 'ate' when simply talking. No country horseman that I know talks this way and it diminished the listening experience.

Really great!
Really great book. Lots of great information, really well written, and narrated. I am sorry for his not good experience with a Christian. That is not the way most of us are. So many people, including myself sometimes get caught up in performance, but lucky for me my horse straightened me out. There is nothing like a relationship with a horse or a good book that brings back those memories.

I loved the way he uses stories to illustrate his point.
Once I got past the annoying stilted narration, I relaxed and enjoyed, appreciated, and listened carefully to Rashad’s words and ideas about how to listen to your horse.

Great information
Such good information. Unfortunately the narration was distracting. I would still recommend this however. Was sad when it ended

Narrator ruins the book!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
No! Because the narration was so terrible (Dan Lawson sounded like he had either just learned English or was speaking to Kindergarten children) that I had wished I had bought the book to read instead of listed to. It makes me leery of listening to other books by Mark Rashid even though the Narrators are different. The information contained in the book was good however.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Dan Lawson?
John Pruden
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No
