The Charlie Parker series continues as the private detective, still recovering from life-threatening wounds, investigates a case that has its origins in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II in this “all-out thrill ride” (Suspense Magazine).

Parker has retreated to the small-town Maine community of Boreas to regain his strength. There, he befriends a widow named Ruth Winter and her young daughter, Amanda. But Ruth has her secrets. Old atrocities are about to be unearthed, and old sinners will kill to hide their sins. Now Parker is about to risk his life to defend a woman he barely knows, one who fears him almost as much as she fears those who are coming for her.

His enemies believe him to be vulnerable. Fearful. Solitary.

But they are wrong. Parker is far from afraid, and far from alone.

For something is emerging from the shadows…

Great book....loved it!

A decently written book with good narration and some interesting characters, but I had two problems: (i) the gratuitous and largely pointless insertion of supernatural elements and (ii) the plausibility of there existing a contemporary group so ruthlessly devoted to protecting Nazi war criminals.

I didn't like the last book nearly as well as this one. I've read all the preceding books all the way back to Every Dead Thing which is probably my favorite thriller of all time. This book gets back on track to the level of great writing I'd come to enjoy from John Connolly.
