As editor of the award-winning Library of America collection of George Washington's writings and a curator of the great man's original papers, John Rhodehamel has established himself as an authority of our nation's preeminent founding father. Rhodehamel examines George Washington as a public figure, arguing that the man - who first achieved fame in his early twenties - is inextricably bound to his mythic status. Solidly grounded in Washington's papers and exemplary in its brevity, this approachable biography is a superb introduction to the leader whose name has become synonymous with America.

Loved the book! It gave me even more information than I have learned in some previous books about George Washington. It could have included more about his time in Barbados with Lawrence. Otherwise, the book was nicely detailed.

The Great Washington

The reader is superb. I learned that the Revolutionary War was a much closer fought thing than I realized, and that it involved a very small number of soldiers. I also learned that Washington was far more than a General; he kept the thin thread of hope intact throughout the entire 8 year ordeal through careful balancing of efforts and difficult decisions—His character was as important as his generalship in gaining our independence.

I realized how little I knew of President Washington

This comprehensive biography includes some new information, historically accurate, and not a rehash of many of the old fables surrounding our first president.

A great biography

while lacking great detail in places, it was a wonderful overview of Washington's life.
