The award-winning international bestseller about the secrets and lies of one man that lead another into a treacherous house of strangers...

When novelist Manuel Ortigosa learns that his husband, Álvaro, has been killed in a car crash, it comes as a devastating shock. It won’t be the last. He’s now arrived in Galicia. It’s where Álvaro died. It’s where the case has already been quickly closed as a tragic accident. It’s also where Álvaro hid his secrets.

The man to whom Manuel was married for fifteen years was not the unassuming man he knew.

Álvaro’s trail leads Manuel deep into one of Spain’s most powerful and guarded families. Behind the walls of their forbidding estate, Manuel is nothing but an unwelcome and dangerous intruder. Then he finds two allies: a stubbornly suspicious police lieutenant and Álvaro’s old friend - and private confessor - from seminary school. Together they’re collecting the pieces of Álvaro’s past, his double life, and his mysterious death.

But in the shadows of nobility and privilege, Manuel is about to unravel a web of corruption and deception that could be as fatal a trap for him as it was for the man he loved.

The story drags on and on. Very little happens for the longest period of time. Other than being in Spain it is a very conventional and not very interesting story effort listening to the whole thing. I determined I never really cared about these people at all if you’re looking for a long, make that overly long, summer read, maybe this is for you. It wasn’t for me.

Ho-hum

The characters were interesting. There were a few noticeable instances where the editing was poor (repeating information that had already been provided). There was a soapy aspect to the family and the relationship of the cop to the family, and I was disappointed ultimately in the explanation of the motives behind the murders. But, I was entertained by the story and the twists and turns along the way.

Soapy, but held my interest.

I listened to this on a trip to France's wine chateaus, which added to the appreciation of this story's environment of Spanish aristocracy.

Good mystery with lots of character development.

This is a wonderful story that was a page-turner. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. The many twists and turns made the story compelling. The dialogue was really great; The narrator did a great job telling the story.

Wonderful Story

I was so sure I knew who the guilty party was - wrong! Very enjoyable read. The narrator used a similar voice for several of the women which made it difficult at times to follow, but overall, very well done.

Great read
