What if you fell in love with the one person you’d sworn to destroy?

Lara has only one thought for her husband on their wedding day: I will bring your kingdom to its knees. A princess trained from childhood to be a lethal spy, Lara knows that the Bridge Kingdom represents both legendary evil - and legendary promise. The only route through a storm-ravaged world, the Bridge Kingdom controls all trade and travel between lands, allowing its ruler to enrich himself and deprive his enemies, including Lara’s homeland. So when she is sent as a bride under the guise of fulfilling a treaty of peace, Lara is prepared to do whatever it takes to fracture the defenses of the impenetrable Bridge Kingdom.

But as she infiltrates her new home - a lush paradise surrounded by tempest seas - and comes to know her new husband, Aren, Lara begins to question where the true evil resides. Around her, she sees a kingdom fighting for survival, and in Aren, a man fiercely protective of his people. As her mission drives her to deeper understanding of the fight to possess the bridge, Lara finds the simmering attraction between her and Aren impossible to ignore. Her goal nearly within reach, Lara will have to decide her own fate: Will she be the destroyer of a king or the savior of her people?

The beginning of an epic romance

It’s been a few months now since I listened to The Bridge Kingdom, but I’m still thinking about how much I enjoyed it. I’ll occasionally go back and look at all the positive reviews and feel proud of this little gem for doing so well since it’s come out. It’s a really fun romantic fantasy, exactly my cup of tea, with a clever plot and engaging characters that kept me tuned in. I loved that the heroine had to pretend to be meek but was actually an assassin—we get to keep this little secret in our back pocket until wham! Lara plays her hand just right. And it’s the beginning of a series so we are going to be getting more of Lara and Aren soon! If you like a fast-paced romantic fantasy with a kickass heroine and a slow burn relationship, I recommend you pick this one up. —Melissa B., Audible Editor

Editorial Review

This book will trigger fellow fantasy romance lovers

While I was in the midst of this book, every hour of my day that I was not listening felt like a wasted hour. Needless to say, I finished it pretty quickly. I will admit that in the beginning I hated our main character, Lara, because I thought she had done a terrible, terrible deed that I could not forgive her for. But when I found out how wrong I was, I loved Lara more fiercely than I had hated her. Narrators Lauren Fortgang and James Patrick Cronin were absolutely perfectly cast. Their performances elicited strong emotions in me, and I devoured the drama, romance, and knife-edged tension faster than I thought possible. It was completely delicious! —Melissa B., Audible Editor

I typically only read/listen to books that my friends have already recommended, but I thought this one sounded interesting so I gave it a try. So glad I did! The story world is creative and unique. The characters are complex and the story is compelling. I really enjoyed the plot. I devoured this book over the course of two or three days. Couldn’t put it down! Looking forward to the next one.

Pleasantly surprised!

This was an excellent story about different Kingdoms and the Bridge Kingdom. The Bridge Kingdom controls trade for several other kingdoms with an incredible Bridge that was built by an ancient people long ago. One Kingdom trys to be the ally of the Bridge Kingdom by sending them a wife for their King. But the new Queen is really a Spy and Assassin that was sent to find all the secrets about the Bridge. But while she gets to know the King and his Kingdom, she falls in love with the King at the same time she figures out how to betray his Kingdom. It all goes BAD IN THE END.....It was a great story though and I really enjoyed listening!!

WHY DOES IT HAVE TO ALL GO BAD?

This book absolutely devoured me from page one. Danielle L. Jensen crafted a fantasy romance that somehow balances brutal political scheming, intense emotional tension, and slow-burn chemistry without ever losing momentum. Lara is the kind of heroine you can’t help but root for — deadly, intelligent, emotionally conflicted, and constantly questioning everything she was raised to believe. And Aren? That man had me folding faster than a cheap lawn chair. Their relationship feels earned, layered, and painfully addictive as trust slowly battles against betrayal. The supporting characters are equally strong, making the world feel alive instead of existing just to prop up the main couple. Every conversation felt loaded with secrets, every alliance felt fragile, and the atmosphere stayed tense in the best way possible.

And that ENDING. I was genuinely furious in the way only a truly good book can make you. The final chapters ripped the rug out from under me and left me staring at the wall wondering how I’m supposed to function before starting book two immediately. It’s one of those fantasy romances that hooks you emotionally while still delivering excellent world-building and political intrigue. If you love enemies-to-lovers with actual stakes, morally gray choices, betrayal, yearning, and enough emotional damage to ruin your sleep schedule, this book is absolutely worth the obsession.
