Thomas Traherne (1636-1674) was an English theologian and author, who was initially known for his books Roman Forgeries (1673), Christian Ethics (1675), and A Serious and Patheticall Contemplation of the Mercies of God (1699). Centuries of Meditations was first published in 1908 after the manuscript was rediscovered in 1898. It is a collection of visionary poems divided into "centuries" with themes that encompass the Christian life and ministry, childhood, happiness, nature, and philosophy. Traherne's poetry considers the beauty of God and his goodness, and is also appreciated by secular lovers of poetry.

This wonderful book provides volumes of eternal insight and if understood has the potential significantly alter how one views this world, how rich one is in God regardless of their financial position and how much of heaven can be experienced now. It’s is also a book they will need to be read a reread to capture all the concepts.

The narrator did a good job of getting Traherne's magnificent prose across to the listener.

The ability of Traherne to raise our gaze to the wonders of Creation and the Cross is amazing.

This book does not work on Audible. At least, it did not for me. The book is fine. It is wonderfully done. I would heartily recommend this as a normal book. I found it frustrating on Audible because it is the kind of book that requires a pause after every sentence. These are "meditations". They are meant to be meditated on. The author does not drive the reader (or listener) to a point, but more asks questions and poses scenarios for contemplation.

The god is love mantra got a little gooey after many, many repetitions. Some of the language is beautiful, and the reader is good, so it might be worth a listen for some. If you want or need to be bludgeoned with simple minded optimism, this book may be your answer.

pedestrian theology with brief moments of poetry
