Publisher's summary

To be an adventurer. One of the elite class of brave souls who travel Eldaria and fight the blight of monsters wherever they are found.

Picture rippling muscles, clad in magical armor, perhaps, artfully splattered with the viscera of foes smote in twain. Or...ooh...alternatively, a severely tasteful robe, dusted - equally artfully - with the ashes of enemies immolated with eldritch fyre.

Now picture these paragons of heroism sitting astride their muscled warhorses, surrounded by the cheering, garland-throwing peasants of a hamlet they have saved from the blight. Now, throw that image out, because this isn’t that story.

Instead, picture a group of adventurers who are not skilled, have slain nothing, don’t own any armor worth burnishing and would probably misspell "eldritch" if given a chance. While the saying holds true that "everybody has to start at zero", it might also be posited that this misfit band of eager wannabes are starting somewhere in the negative.

Bards are not going to be composing any epic ballads about their exploits anytime soon, unless it's in the form of a cautionary tale. But despite all these setbacks, they are destined to save the world, right? No. But they might, anyway.

hilarious

if you looking for a light fun adventure, I highly recommend this book. It is not a sprawling epic, but it knows what it is and it does that well.

Loved it!!

Only thing is I really hated the measurements. It was hard to picture how long, big, or far something was when not using the characters height or a commonly standard object/thing like a 'house', or 'horse'. When you use "rods" What is the 'standard rod'? Also, the measurement of time on your hands really??? Not a sundial or other commonly used time item from the dark ages? Even sunset, sunrise, mid day all were actual things used to describe time before mechanical clocks....hands I don't understand them in other increments than hours but how do you use them?? Please tell me the reference source you used for your measurements... I'm genuinely curious... I doubt you'd answer me but I'd like to know....lol...

Amazing first book!

Refreshing in its humor and originality.
Even better than Drew Hayes in my opinion.
Can't wait for the next novel!

Great Adventure with a Group of Misfits

A tale of unlikely heroes. The story is well written, and is a great start to what the series. The story plays out like a video game in some ways. The adventurers start out defeating slow moving weak opponents and level up and fight stronger foes. Erik the Fighter, former hay farmer's son, leads the group with his enchanted shield. Alyx is a wizard, but goes full nerd throughout most of the story. His head seems to be stuck in the clouds. Kate is the acrobat who is as graceful as a hippo. And Zee is the least elf like elf you will ever meet. Mikael Naramore is one of my favorite narrators, and he did a bang up job on this one.

I'm glad I picked this one.

The story is great but the narrator was too serious to carry the humor. Some of the best writers have audio books that entierly flop because of that. Reading it myself was much more enjoyable.

I loved this Book

I loved this book so, so much.

The fact that every character (expect the Bard) was introduced with the phrase it was not going well tells you everything you need to know about the skills of these civilians turned adventurers.

The Bard's enthusiasm added a nice pep to the story at the right time.

Also the fighter accidentally setting the smithy on fire by accidentally setting off a fire sword and dropping it and being unable to grab it. . . .is a scene that will remain with me always.

Very Good

I often search for a light-hearted and fun fantasy series and this meets many of the criteria. It takes the common fantasy game party: warrior, mage, sage, acrobat and bard and wittily follows their fates as they gradually raise their experience level, often with good fortune rather than skill.

Really well written and narrated.
