Sherlock Jones, a modern-day hard-boiled detective, is an aging dysfunctional cynic whose major food groups are bourbon, caffeine, nicotine, Vicodin, and bar food. He supplements his army disability check by advertising as a private investigator on Craig’s List, offering divorce tails and missing person traces. At first, when he’s offered a retainer to investigate an actual murder, he sees it as an easy way to pad his meager income, but he quickly realizes reclaiming his own self-worth through the eyes of his client with the sexy European accent is worth much more than the $500 cash she counted out.

Driven by a cast of colorful characters and multiple plots, this book moves at a fast pace, offering action, suspense, and laughter. It’s a novel that makes it easy to cheer against the really-bad bad guys and cheer for the not-so-good good guys, while wincing at some of the stereotypes that haunt us Southerners. The book is set in today’s multicultural Atlanta, and deals with contemporary issues like internet stalking, sexual predators, homosexuality, and intolerance.
